Third base has been a position of strength for the Phillies more often
than not since 1964. Dick Allen, Mike Schmidt, and Scott Rolen made
great offensive contributions to the team, and except for Allen, were
outstanding defensively. Don Money, after several seasons at 3B and
SS with the Phils, went on to be a 4-time All-Star in the AL. Toby
Harrah, originally signed as an amateur free agent by the Phils but
lost in the '67 minor league draft, went on to have a similarly strong
career in the AL. Throw in a strong season from Dave Hollins in '92
and the Phils ability to find productive third basemen lasted through
most of the period under review. Although as they say in the
investment world, past performance is no guarantee of future earnings
(I'm looking at you, David Bell and Wes Helms).
While there have been some unimpressive seasons--Rick Schu, Charlie
Hayes, Dave Hollins in some years--truely bad seasons have been rare.
#2 David Bell, 2003. Hit 195, slugged 283, for an OPS+ of 56.
#1 John Vukovich, 1971. 217 at-bats, five doubles, no home runs. A .
211 on-base percentage and a .189 slugging percentage. The Phils
would use 7 players at third that year including Don Money, Tony
Taylor, and the immortal Bobby Pfeil.
Vukovich was the 10th pick in the '66 amateur draft and would play 10
seasons in the Bigs, most with the Phils.
