I watched the first episode of The Bronx is Burning after the home run derby
lastnight. I was less than impressed. It's like the actors are doing
immitations rather than acting a role.

I thought the best part of the show was the end when they showed the real
Reggie Jackson giving his impressions of what happened during the time. He's
still at odds even today with Robert Ward and the Sport Magazine interview.
Of course that included the famous "Straw that stirs the drink" quote.

I missed it due to the HR derby marathon running an hour overtime
(brilliant planning by ESPN to hype a show and then screw up the start
time), so I'm not sure where the series starts off. However, Reggie
supposedly said that when he was on the Orioles and was asked if he
would consider going to the Yankees.

Agree with above....surprised they left out one of Reggie's classic
quotes upon joining the Yankees--something along the lines of "they'll
be naming a candy bar after me".

Weak acting but the old media clips were pretty good.

Platt and Turturro are usually pretty good but the script did them no
favors. Plus they tried so hard to make Turturro look like Martin the ears
made him look like a caricature instead.

Of course a lot of people would say Billy made himself look like a
caricature a long time ago. Smile

No doubt it would have done better as a documentary with more archival
footage. It was hard to take your eyes of the ears they gave Turtorro
during his scenes.

The show's style out 70'ed the 70's! What I didn't get was the constant
return to the Son of Sam thing, unless they were going WAY out on a limb and
trying to draw some kind of weird parallel between Reggie's # 44 and
Berkowitz's .44.
My overall opinion: baseball's answer to "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman." I'll
continue to watch, because it's about the Yankees.

The formal title is "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bronx is Burning".

A friend just told me Jason Giambi was in the 1st
episode...supposedly, he was the taxi driver who shouted out to George
and Reggie as they were walking on the streets of NYC...can anyone
else confirm it was Giambi?

I'm pretty sure it was Jason in a cameo. If not, it was his twin.

That definitely was Jason as the cabbie. His name was in the opening
credits, so I was watching for him. I was surprised that he played that
role, essentially as a cameo.
