After four straight losing season I've come to the conclusion that you need to
have "names." You need good players. The idea that you can win with a bunch of
role players who produce is false. You need big names like Thome, Bonds,
Pujols, you know the rest. If you have two or three of those guys and they stay
healthy you should be in good shape. I hate all these books and experts who
want you to think that if you use the stats you can win with David Wright and
Melvin Mora.

Its not just that you need good players, you need "name" players. And by the
way about a million magazines and so called experts make it out to seem like
you can win your league with Brandon Looper and Tim Wakefield type players

You need some of the name players you are talking about, but assuming
that everyone gets a couple of those, you then need to make good calls
on guys like Looper and Wakefield. Assuming you get your Bonds,
Pujols, or ARods, you do indeed win and lose based on your Loopers and
Wakefields.

Who are you drafting in the first three rounds if you aren't drafting
name players? If you are passing over Bonds and Pujols to grab
Wakefields and Loopers, you need to adjust your draft strategy. If
you think Wakefield is going to have a great year, you do not bump him
up your draft list. You draft him in the 9th (or whatever) round
where he normally might go. If he does have a great year, you have
then got more out him that other people got out of their 9th round
pick. If you manage to get more of your 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th, and 11th
round picks than other people got out of theirs, you are now on your
way to a winning

Oh yeah, and don't read the magazines. Learn to do your own
projections and player valuations. The things you learn doing those
things, is extraordinarily more important than the fortunetelling they
put in the magazines. It's like the difference between astronomy and
astrology.

There's quite a bit of psychology involved with Fantasy baseball. I agree
with that. There's a guessing game and for some reason a "star" with
similar statistics to a player on the Royals or Pirates will be drafted
earlier( or spent more $). So I kind of agree with what the OP is saying.
If you use your early picks to draft "stars", there's a better chance that a
sleeper pick awaits when you aren't competing against yourself by selecting
that sleeper yourself.

Good Post.
