It's funny with guys like Mondesi. There's an inclination, as with
players like Escobar (as per another thread), to want to believe that
if such physically talented players could just get their brains into
the game, there's no telling how great they could be.
But after a while, you've got to give up on these sorts of players, or
at least temper your expectations and not give them $10M a year
contracts. Sure, something *could* happen to them and they *could*
learn to leverage their physical skills (Sammy Sosa is the best recent
example I can think of), but more often than not, they'll break your
heart. They'll look like world beaters one day and bums the next.
I'm curious about how much scouts factor in a young player's mental
makeup when assessing him. Of course, even if the scouts *were* to
factor that in, it's an awfully presumptuous thing to pretend to be
able to measure a player's intellectual capacity to harness his
abilities. Especially based on fleeting observations.
This is not a rhetorical question, but would you rather see a 350/450
OF who's phsyically talented and not able to leverage his talent (a la
Mondesi) or a player who *has* to be smart because of physical
deficiencies (a la Kielty or a Reed Johnson)?
The former at least give you reason to hold out hope that they could
get better. The latter are easier on the nerves and more likely to
become fan favourites.
