Greg Luzinski and Mike Scioscia both. Anyway, many baseball players
seem to very out of shape for professional athletes.

Someone that doesn't look very slow but is slow as molasses is Fred McGriff.

Sam Horn.

The Orioles used to pinch run for him with noted speedster Chris Hoiles.

Pete Rose was not a "burner" when it comes to speed, but he was far
from slow. He had pretty decent speed in his prime. When you also
add his hustle to the mix, he was a pretty good runner.

Nobody has mentioned Mark McGwire. He was very slow. In fact, it
would be a very interesting race to take a young Cecil Fielder (from
1990 or earlier) and race him a against McGwire. It would not be out
of the question that Fielder might win. He was a tremendous 3 sport
athlete in High School (I remember seeing a picture of him dunking a
basketball). While he was never fast, he moved very well for his size
when he was with Toronto in the late 80's.

Wasn't Will Clark as slow as a person with a broken leg?

I didn't realize that when people said that Rose wasn't quick on his
feet that they mean it literally.

i wont say that he was slow, but Tom Candiotti was the only player that I
ever saw ground out to the LEFTfielder.

Speaking of which (Kruk that is)

Among my alltime faves (on baserunning not fielding) is Bill James
on John Kruk. (from the 1987 Abstract)

What a wonderful, wonderful player. I love him, like a Teddy Bear.
There hasn't been anybody like this around since John
Wockenfuss came up.

He's got a funny name, a funny stance, and he's absolutely
hilarious on the bases. He doesn't run fast but, boy, does he
run hard.

When he gets pressed real hard, like somebody is running up his
back or something, he sticks his arms out and pinwheels them
real fast when he runs, sort of looking as if his arms where
attached to his body by a rubber band that was too short, so
that the joints would go out straight rather than relaxing into a
normal position.

At the same time, he puffs out his cheeks and blows real hard
while he runs. [...]

Please explain this because that sounds hilarious! How long ago was
this and what was the situation? I imagine that he had to fall down,
or was hurt?

1992. Los Angeles at Montreal. Candiotti was the starting pitcher for LA.
Candiotti hit a single to left (or so we thought). Moises Alou was playing
left for Montreal; he fielded the ball and came up throwing. Candiotti was
out by about a step and a half. We were sitting down the rightfield line,
near the LA bullpen. You could see the Dodger players falling all over
themselves with laughter. I remember Roger McDowell especially; He was
laughing so hard he couldnt warm up properly; somebody else had to come in
to get the Save, but I dont remember who.

Tom Candiotti never pitched (or batted) at Montreal in 1992. Must have
been another year.

Only day that works is July 4, 1993, except McDowell *did* get the save.

I saw Edgar stealing a base back in '01. My friend and I were both shocked
("Did you see that?!?!?!?")

The slowest Mariner, though, has to be James Baldwin. A pitcher, true, but
as soon as he started from the dugout, you could get up, hit the restroom,
get a beer and an Ivar Dog, and be back in your seat before he made it to
home plate.
