#4 is the best option, believe me. I gave up on baseball midway thru
the Expos' 1995 season and haven't regretted it since. I went to my
1st game in 10 years this summer with my 7 year old in Montreal to see
the Phillies and then saw the Expos again in Toronto the following
week.
Did I care who won? Sure. Was I emotionally involved like I was from
1969-1985. Heck no. I went for one reason: to have a good time with my
son, and we did. No more, no less.
So after a brief return to the fold this year to see how the folks
here in the ng were dealing with the deathwalk, I will probably go off
and not watch a regular season game ever again. There's a slight
chance that I'll watch the Washington team's first game if it's on TV,
but beyond that..........
The sports business has become too ludicrous for me - $5 million
salaries to marginally better than marginal players, $4.00 hotdogs, $6
beers and $15 parking? F*** 'em. I can easily afford to pay those
crazy prices, but choose not to. If my son tells me he wants to go to
games, then fine, I'll take him. But as far as I'm concerned, the
Expos died in 2004 and my interest in baseball died in 1995.
Hockey and basketball are going to follow too. The operative word for
the next 10 years in professional sports will be "attrition". I'd be
very surprised if we don't lose about 10-20 teams in hockey,
basketball and baseball in that time period........and I probably
won't even notice.
