I know teams and media have access to Stats, Inc to perform custom
queries on their databases and pull great statistics. My question is
how does an average fan have the ability to query something like
that? For example, I am currently interested in the all time success
percentage of stealing 3rd base. Does anyone know of a great website
that has tons of statistical information? I'd even be satisfied to
see what the success rate was in 2006 for instance...figuring year in
and year out it might be pretty similar.

Thoughts?

You can get custom searches from Stats, Inc (at least you could do it
back in the early 90s, when I inquired). However, it isn't cheap
(Zminda quoted me something like $500 for the search I wanted).

"Great statistics" is an oxymoron. Sit back and enjoy the game for
what it is, as it is playing.

Why? For every player, on every team, against every pitcher and
catcher on every team, that number is different. So what is the
point of knowing an average? This knowledge will not enhance your
understanding of the game in any way, so what is the point?

Sigh. Ok, here's one. http://www.bwba.org/stats.html

cordially, as always,

Start with:

www.retrosheet.org and looks for the Game Logs.

A second place would be www.baseball-reference.com and look for the
Play Index.

For seasonal information, go to www.baseball1.com and download the
Lahman database. If you have any basic MS Access skills, you can do a
lot with that DB.

Finally, there's http://www.baseball-databank.org/ which I haven't
used, but seems to have a lot of stuff.

Enjoy.
