KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals placed Kelly Stinnett
on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, their second catcher to go on the
DL in four days.
Stinnett has nerve irritation in his right elbow and will see a
specialist Wednesday in Cincinnati, the same doctor who performed
surgery on his elbow Sept. 7, 2001. Stinnett missed half the 2002
season with the Reds after the surgery.
On Saturday, the Royals put starting catcher Benito Santiago on the
disabled list with a broken left hand after he was hit by a pitch in
Philadelphia.
The Royals promoted catcher Alberto Castillo from Triple-A Omaha,
where he was hitting .255 with one home run and 15 RBIs in 48 games,
to take Stinnett's roster spot.
Castillo, 34, has played nine seasons in the majors with five clubs,
including last season with the San Francisco Giants. He has a .218
batting average in 343 games.
The Royals promoted catching prospect Mike Tonis, a second-round pick
in 2000, on Saturday from Double-A Wichita when Santiago was injured.
