looks like another typically stellar year for Albert Pujols. projecting
todays stats from http://www.baseball-reference.com/p/pujolal01.shtml,
he's on pace for 42 HRs, 110 RBI, and...127 walks??? HR, RBI: situation
normal. but the walk total is up by ~27% over his previous career best.
so what's up? statistical fluctuations from a small sample size? math
error? more respect from the pitchers? (hard to buy that one) more
patience at the plate???

I wouldn't know in Pujol's case. Still, I think that it is possible to
develop patience even at a later stage in their career. I remember
Sosa's transition from what he was up to 1997 to his remarkable run from
1998 to 2003. We don't know if that was aided by steroids or not, but
the surge in batting average surely had to do with him taking a better
approach to pitch selection. That adjustment is more mental.

years back there used be a guy who posted 'peak lists' here.
the neat thing about them was (IIRC) that they included a
measure of a player's production both within his peak years
and without. sure wish he was still posting those things,
because Sosa looks like a guy with a phenomenal peak, and
not a whole lot of production outside that peak (well,
compared to the peak anyway...OPS+ of ~115 outside his nominal
peak vs. 160+ inside)

Dale Stephenson. I seem to have mislaid his e-mail address.
His last such posting appears to have been in 2004: <URL:
