Has there ever been a major league inning where the same player made all
three outs?

I took it to mean as a batter. The other two have pretty obviously been
done (how many times has a pitcher struck out the side?).

I think I have heard of one batter making two outs in the same inning,
but three would take at least a thirteen run inning, and how many times
does that happen?

Not sonce 1900, and maybe never. This question was discussed on the
SABR mailing list in August, 2004.

Subject: 3 outs by same batter in inning

In the letters section of the October 2004 issue of Baseball Digest, a
reader asks whether any batter has ever made all 3 outs in one inning.
The answer is that of the 17 players to bat 3 times in one inning since
1900, none of them made all 3 outs in one inning.

The 17 players since 1900 can easily be found in TSN Record Book under
"most times faced pitcher as batsman, inning". Those 17 follow with
added information on what they did:

Aug 25, 1922, 4th inning -- Marty Callaghan, Chicago Cubs (2 singles &
strikeout)

July 4, 1948, 7th inning -- Ted Williams of Boston Red Sox (2 walks &
groundout)

May 21, 1952, 1st inning -- Billy Cox, Pee Wee Reese & Duke Snider of
Brooklyn
Cox -- groundout, single, hit by pitch
Reese -- two walks & single
Snider -- home run, walk & strikeout

June 18, 1953, 7th inning -- Sammy White, Gene Stephens, Tom Umphlett,
Johnny Lipon & George Kell of Boston
White -- 2 singles & walk
Stephens -- 2 singles & double
Umphlett -- 2 singles & walk
Lipon -- strikeout, single, walk
Kell -- double, lined out to right, flied out to right

Aug 8, 1954, 8th inning -- Gil Hodges of Brooklyn (double, triple & fly
to center - possibly robbed of grand slam)

Sept. 20, 1972, 2nd inning -- Dusty Baker of Atlanta (was 3-for-5 in game
with 2 2B & HR; HR came in 2nd inning)

Aug 3, 1989, 1st inning -- Mariano Duncan & Luis Quinones of Cincinnati
Duncan -- walk, double, fly to left
Quinones -- 2 singles & fly to right

April 19, 1996, 8th inning -- Darryl Hamilton of Texas (was 4-for-6
with a walk in game)

July 15, 1997, 7th inning -- Stan Javier of San Francisco (2 singles &
groundout)

June 27, 2003, 1st inning -- Johnny Damon of Boston (single, double,
triple; batter following Damon did not bat 3 times due to runner thrown
out on bases to end inning)

But what about players before 1900? TSN Record Book for batting 3 times
in an inning prior to 1900 lists Larry Murphy of Washington AA, June
17, 1891, 1st inning and says the NL record is shared by 10 players.

TSN box of 6/20/91 issue, p. 4, shows that Murphy was 1-for-5 in the
6/17/1891 game. Anyone know if he had an 0-3 inning?

By looking at the TSN record for "most times reached first base safely,
inning" & checking TSN boxes & articles found on ProQuest, I can
identify 9 of the 10 pre-1900 NL batters to bat 3 times in an inning,
as follows:

Sept 6, 1883, 7th inning -- Ned Williamson, Tom Burns, Fred Pfeffer, Fred
Goldsmith & Billy Sunday of Chicago Cubs
Williamson -- two singles & double
Burns -- two doubles & home run
Pfeffer -- two singles & double
Goldsmith -- two doubles & safe on error
Sunday -- two singles & foul out

June 18, 1894, 1st inning, a.m. game -- Bobby Lowe, Herman Long, Hugh
Duffy & Tommy McCarthy of Boston Braves
Accounts state that Boston had 11 hits, 3 HR, 7 walks & a hit batter
(Lowe)
in the first inning.
Game totals:
Lowe - 2 singles, 2B, HP (HP was in 1st)
Long - 2 singles, 2 BB
Duffy - 2 singles, HR, 3 BB (HR was in 1st)
McCarthy - 2B & BB
The 3-out candidate is McCarthy, the last of the four men in the batting
order.

Does anyone know the other NL pre-1900 player to bat 3 times in an
inning? Did he, Larry Murphy or Tommy McCarthy have an 0-for-3 inning?

Tom Carey, Hartford NL, 5/13/1876, 4th inning.

According to the Washington Post for that game, Murphy began the inning
by "tapping a hit safely," so it looks like he's out in terms of having
all 3 outs in the inning.
