This guy sure is a better player than Bonds. If nothing else, better paid.

Pat Nevin, according to ESPN.com!

I assume you are referring to a certain A. Rodriguez of the New York
American League ballclub, who ESPN currently ranks 41st, behind such
luminaries of the game as Lyle Overbay and Hee Seop Choi. (Who,
incidentally, have both very quietly had rather nice half-seasons...)

As usual, Barry leads by such an amount that it isn't funny. His OPS
of 1.421 is .299 ahead of the #2 guy (Ramirez), and .335 ahead of the
#2 NL guy (Helton).

Ramirez' 1.122 is .299 ahead of #74 Hillenbrand; Helton's 1.086 is
..335 ahead of NL #64 Jimenez (actually .336 ahead).

well, he made up some ground today. He must have had two hits or
something. Sorry for the somewhat negative post, but when I see so
much "better player in baseball", plus now Rolen as a leading MVP, it
is difficult not to get pissed. Even sabermetrically oriented people
are drifting towards mediocy.

by luminaries, I think you mean "minimum salary". yep. another piece
of evidence of the drift towards mediocy is that saber-oriented folks
say that ARod is earning his keep.

and about .395 ahead of MVP Rolen. This year is going to be worse than
Dawson 1987 or Pendleton 1991.

In fairness, a good part of the gap between The Barry and Rolen offensively
is offset by the fact that Rolen is an excellent defensive third baseman,
while Bonds is a mediocre to poor left fielder at this point in his
career--this is an edge that Sosa and Pujols didn't have in the prior three
MVP votes. Rolen also has the edge as far as durability goes. If Bonds
doesn't repeat his pattern of recent years and have an even more ridiculous
second half than his first half (rather possible if teams continue to refuse
to pitch to him), I can see Rolen's glove work and monster RBI totals
swaying enough MVP voters to make the vote close

As I say, sabermetrics is an opinion. Defense is worth 400 points OPS
nowadays. Why not 800? Then Neifi Perez would be in the running too.
he is very durable.
