Clemens - 11-6, 1.56 era, 8.18 k/9, 0.93 whip
Carpenter - 18-4, 2.34 era, 8.16 k/9, 0.97 whip
Halladay - 12-4, 2.41 era, 6.86 k/9, 0.96 whip
Pedro - 13-5, 2.77 era, 9.00 k/9, 0.89 whip
Willis - 17-8, 2.67 era, 6.25 k/9, 1.13 whip
Peavy - 11-6, 2.97 era, 10.03 k/9, 1.00 whip
They've all been tremendous, of course. Pedro's k/9, whip, and w/l
beat Clemens, but Rajah's era is more than a full run less. Carpenter,
meanwhile, has stellar era, k/9, and whip numbers, plus a phenomenal
w/l record. Halladay has been injured, or his record would be even
better. Willis has excellent all around numbers. And Peavy - dominant
k/9 stats.
If I had to rank them, I'd go:
1. Clemens
2. Pedro
3. Carpenter
4. Peavy
5. Halladay
6. Willis
John
PS - I agreed with the Sox letting Pedro go, given the contract the
Mets offered. But boy, wouldn't it be nice running him out there every
5th day right now? Ugh. >> Stay informed about: Who's the better pitcher? |

That's interesting. I wouldn't pick Clemens. As Yankees fan, I think I
know why. Pedro is my choice, of course no more than 100 pitches. >> Stay informed about: Who's the better pitcher? |

I think Halliday is better than Carpenter. Carpenter has had a great couple
of years, but that's about it.
Best over the next 5 years:
Willis
Halliday
Peavy
Pedro
Carpenter
Clemens
Best stats this season:
Clemens
Pedro
Carpenter
Halliday
Willis
Peavy
If I needed one of them to start a game 7 this year:
Clemens
Pedro
Halliday
Willis
Carpenter
Peavy >> Stay informed about: Who's the better pitcher? |

It is interesting that of the bunch only Halliday is from the AL. To me
that is very impressive, and I'd have to wonder if he would have the best
numbers of all if he pitched in the NL. >> Stay informed about: Who's the better pitcher? |

I beleive so. Clemens's last couple of years was not close to last
year, never mind this season. Same with Pedro. I think pitching in the
NL is an advantage. >> Stay informed about: Who's the better pitcher? |

No doubt the NL is an advantage for ERA (not for wins and only a
slight advantage for IPs). On average, it is worth 1/2 a run for ERA.
Hard to say what it is worth at the very top.
Pedro has better numbers this year than last, but last year was his
worst full year as a RS, so an upswing was to be expected. Still,
Pedro's "bad" numbers from last year would still make him the best
pitcher on the RS this year.
Clemens is too much better this year from his NYY years for NL to be
the full explanation.

WHIP is actually my favorite quick-and-dirty stat for looking at pitchers.
ERA ends up being fairly dependent on the park, bullpen and the defense. To
me, a pitcher with a dominant WHIP is just not giving the opposition many
chances to do real damage with the occasional blast or blooper that falls
in. K/9 is my 2nd favorite stat. I like Peavy, but for me it's Pedro.
I know that the FO's mantra is payroll flexibility and it wouldn't be much
fun to pay anyone $14 million for projected injury/ineffectiveness at the
back end of a contract, but sometimes that championship window is only open
so long (and $130 million player development machines aren't guaranteed to
work.) Perhaps the FO had its worries about Schilling and couldn't imagine
paying $30 million/yr. for injured pitchers. We may never know the whole
Pedro-leaving story, but nobody can argue that he wouldn't look fantastic at
the top of the Sox rotation right about now. >> Stay informed about: Who's the better pitcher? |
