I imagine some of you are at least casually paying attention to how Javy
has been doing this year, particularly with his 13 game hitting streak
(which ended Thursday) and .400-ish average. However, has anyone taken
a look at his walk and strikeout totals thus far? Through 15 games,
Javy has already walked 9 times. For him, that's astounding! Last
season, in the best offensive year of his career, he didn't take his 9th
walk until June 14, his 47th game of the season. Javy is thirty games
ahead of schedule. Similarly, through 15 games, he's only struck out 7
times. Last year, through 15 games, Javy had already struck out 13
times. Anyone want to offer any explanations? The Subway diet theory
only goes so far... >> Stay informed about: The patient Javy Lopez? |

Exactly. No more horrible visions of bowling balls and pistachio pudding
distracting him from the task at hand.
Good to see he's put all that behind him.

Although quite a few here will assert that a professional player is "what he
is," and cannot imporve his mental approach (by focusing and butting forth
more effort) or his physical approach (by losing weight and increasing his
speed and agility), I disagree. Javy is a prime example of what happens
when a player decides to improve his physical conditioning and mental
approach to the game. He made a change in his lifestyle and rededicated
himself to the game. It has paid wopping dividends for him. To lose the
weight he lost and refocus his mind on the task at hand is not an easy
venture in today's world, but he did it and continues to do it. Contrarily,
Andruw will always be the outstanding player who choose to be good. He is
happy being a good player, and he doesn't appear to have the personal
fortitude and self-control required to be great. It takes a commitment and
self-control aspect that he lacks.

Well conventional wisdom says that in the AL they throw more breaking
balls and less heat. Conventional wisdom also says that Javy is good at
hitting such pitches. Thur less K's.
dick
-- the above remarks should not be construed as an endorcement for
conventional wisdom. Historical performance is not necessarily an
indicator of future performance. >> Stay informed about: The patient Javy Lopez? |

Maybe pitchers in the NL are more likely to challenge hitters than pitchers
in the AL. >> Stay informed about: The patient Javy Lopez? |
