This offense looks about the same as last year. I guess that's expected
since the personel is mostly the same. Not enough OBP and/or men on base,
and only scoring on homers. I think I'm more worried about the offense than
anything else.

Patterson, Bako/Ross/Valentin, Pitcher are pretty much automatic outs and
Phillips and Encarnacion are too impatient at the plate for my lack of
patience with them!

Good grief, Rich. Two games into the season, against Brandon Webb and
Dan Haren, and you're complaining about the offense? Can't you at
least wait until the guys get into double-digit ABs before making any
judgments?

Nothing that I said was inaccurate. All 6 runs tonight scored on homers.
That happened too often last year. Despite their homers tonight, they are
swinging at too much junk. In the long run, that won't be a good thing.

I'm guessing Encarnacion REALLY loved that pitch he saw coming, because the
game report noted that he "homered hard."

During the brief rain delay before the opening day game, Marty and company
went on and on about how this years reds team looked so different than last
years team. They even mentioned that there were four new starters in the
lineup. Well, I could count three. Patterson was new in center. He counts.
Technically Jeff Keppinger wasn't the starting shortstop last year.
Likewise, technically Valentin wasn't the starting catcher last season.
So I'm staring at the radio wondering what the heck they were talking about.
Tons of optamism about the "new look" reds and I'm thinkin'....this is the
same crew that was here last year. They never did enumarate who the fourth
"new" starter was.

I think Dunn's ground ball on opening day spoke volumes. If your description
of the ninth tonight was accurate, he's gonna take whatever they give him
this year. I'm thrilled by that.

I don't see how it's possible that Edwin could come out of the shoot and
look that bad in the field. I just don't get it. Given the reds array of
talent at third base in the minor leagues, I don't think Encarnacion is
gonna be around long.

The thing that concerns me most is that tonight, like so much of last
season, was a late-inning come from behind win. You just really can't feel
good about the team if they're going to rely on these miracles to win.
Obviously I'm not getting too worked up 2 games into the season, but if
they do make a habit of getting behind and needing late-inning miracles to
win I think we're in for a repeat of last season, no matter how improved
our bullpen might be.

think U forgot about Griffey - he tearing the ball up - especially with men
on base ! If there is a change in the line-up, Griffey needs to move down
in the order (maybe 8 til he performs). John

The main scary thing is the defense. That's so scary they should
make a motion picture of it and rake in some cash.

After that, catcher.

Third, Gonzales. Doesn't sound like he is coming back anytime soon.

What did you hear about Gonzo? I thought I read recently that he was
taking batting practice again. Not that he needs to hurry back or
anything, I'm starting to drink the Keppinger Kool-Aid.

Yesterday's pregame they said he had started to run but that his
knee was still hurting him. Maybe they should take him to another
doctor. Anyway, that doesn't sound good. You can't really play
shortstop or do anything offensively if you do not have good
wheels. Unfortunately with his son's condition last year and
now this injury, that signing has turned into a bit of a bust.

Another problem is we seem to hit into a lot of inning killer
double plays. Even Phillips who I would think with his speed
would be hard to double up. However, we seem to have a large
number of big scoring innings too. AS long as we score more
than the other team things should work out.
