AAA: Fresno had the first day of its three-day all-star break
Grizzlies on the PCL leaderboards:
--Hitters:
AVG: Timpner 1st, Schierholtz 2nd
OBP: Timpner 5th
3B: Lewis 7th
BB: Leone 3rd
SB: Leone 6th
CS: Timpner 5th, Figueroa 9th
--Pitchers:
ERA: Begg 4th
WHIP: Begg 5th
IP: Blackley 5th, Palmer 9th
K: Kinney 3rd, Blackley 10th
HR: Kinney 4th
BB: Blackley 8th
HB: Palmer 1st, Blackley 4th
AA: Connecticut defeated Bingham 6-4
Connecticut: LF Alex Requena: 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB, SO , SB
Connecticut: 3B Simon Klink: 3 for 4, HR, SF
Connecticut: 2B Mark Minicozzi: 3 for 5
Binghamton: RF Lastings Milledge: 2 for 4, 2 HR
Connecticut: RHP Brooks McNiven: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 2
HR
Connecticut: RHP Justin Hedrick: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 0
HR
Connecticut: RHP Brian Anderson: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 1
HR
Klink connected for his 3rd HR. With three hits each, Klink and
Minicozzi raised their respective AVGs to .253 and .224. In the
series Requena was 5 for 11 with 2 XBH, 2 BB and 2 SB; but his OBP
remains below .290. The Mets' Milledge is too good for the Eastern
League. In five games, he is 10 for 23 with 5 XBH and 3 HR.
McNiven has gone seven full innings in three of his six starts. In
those three starts, he has just four strikeouts. He remained very
effective today, except when facing Milledge, who took him deep
twice. His ERA rose to 2.82, which is lower than the ERAs of Hedrick
and Anderson, the two relievers who followed him and who are
considered better prospects. Hedrick was credited with his 2nd hold
and Anderson with his 20th save. Anderson had a string of eight
straight appearances with a strikeout snapped. He yielded his 3rd HR
over 36.0 IP.
A+: San Jose lost to Visalia 8-3
San Jose: C Adam Witter: 1 for 4, HR, PB
San Jose: 2B Bradley Boyer: 2 for 3, SB, 2 E
Visalia: DH Aaron Cunningham: 3 for 4, 2B, SF
San Jose: RHP Gregorio Martinez: 4.0+ IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 0
HR
San Jose: RHP Kelvin Pichardo: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 0 HR
San Jose: RHP Tyler Walker: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 0 HR
San Jose: RHP Sergio Romo: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 0 HR
Witter connected for his 8th homer and allowed his 7th passed ball.
Boyer was the only Giant to reach base twice, with a couple singles
raising his AVG to .239. He now has 12 steals and 5 errors. The
D'backs' Cunningham remains one of the hottest hitters in the minors
as three hits raised his AVG to .371.
Another ineffective start for Martinez drops his W-L record to 4-7.
Pichardo's ERA rose back above 3.00. A night after pitching in
Fresno, Walker traveled up the highway to pitch in Visalia. Romo had
a perfect inning to lower his ERA below 2.50. His string of eight
consecutive appearances with multiple strikeouts was snapped.
A-: Augusta defeated Greenville 7-6
Augusta: SS Emmanuel Burriss: 1 for 3, BB, SF, SO, 2 SB, E
Augusta: 3B Ryan Rohlinger: 2 for 4, HR, HBP, SO
Augusta: DH Matthew Weston: 1 for 4, HR
Greenville: RF Josh Reddick: 3 for 5, 3B
Augusta: LHP Steven Calicutt: 2.0+ IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, 0 HR
Augusta: RHP Paul Lussier: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 0 HR
Augusta: RHP Ryan Shaver: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 0 HR--1
HB
Augusta: RHP Juan Trinidad: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 0 HR
Greenville: RHP Daniel Bard: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 0
HR--1 HB
Rohlinger connected for his team-leading 15th HR. Weston connected
for his third long ball this month and his 9th HR of the season.
Burriss now has 23 SB and 11 E in 43 games as a GreenJacket. He has
four walks in his last 10 games after having just seven walks in his
previous 33 games. The 20-year-old Reddick has quite the impressive
stats for junior college player drafted in the 17th draft round (by
the Red Sox). He entered tonight's game hitting .320/.370/.497 in 44
games.
I'm not sure why, but Calicutt made a spot start in what would be
Clayton Tanner's normal turn in the rotation. Calicutt's ERA rose to
4.81. In long relief with 3.0 IP each, Lussier and Shaver lowered
their respective ERA's to 4.15 and 2.29. Trinidad suffered his 2nd
blown save, but his ERA remains below 1.00. Bard, the Red Sox 1st
round pick a year ago, has a 3.29 ERA over seven Sally League starts.
He has struggled with control most of the year as he has issued 41 BB
over 40.2 IP this year in a dozen starts.
ssA: Salem-Keizer lost to Everett 5-1
(snapping the Volcanoes 8-game winning streak)
Salem-Keizer: RF Sean Van Elderen: 1 for 3, 2B, BB, SO
Salem-Keizer: C Jackson Williams: 0 for 1, 2 BB
Salem-Keizer: LF Jeremiah Luster: 0 for 3, 3 SO
Everett: 3B Matt Mangini: 1 for 2, 2 BB
Salem-Keizer: RHP Ryan McGrath: 4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1
HR
Everett: RHP Mark Lowe: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 0 HR
Van Elderen and Williams were the only two Volcanoes to reach base
twice. Van Elderen has 10 doubles in 20 games. Williams has nearly
has many hits as walks, with 8 BB and 9 H among 41 AB. Luster's AVG
dropped to .053. He struck out all three times tonight after having
just one strikeout previously this year. Mangini, the Mariners' first
round supplemental pick, reached base three times for the second
consecutive.
McGrath now has a 6.53 ERA. The Mariners' Lowe, who had made a couple
rehab appearances with Tacoma earlier this month, made a one-inning
rehab start for Everett.
R: Giants defeated Brewers 6-1
Scottsdale: 3B Angel Villalona: 1 for 5, 2B, SO
Scottsdale: C Johnny Monell: 2 for 3, 3B, 2 BB, SB, CS
Scottsdale: RF Santiago Lara: 1 for 4, HR, 2 SO
Scottsdale: RHP Oliver Odle: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 0 HR
Scottsdale: RHP Mike Loree: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 0 HR
Monell showed speed with a triple and steal that you don't normally
associate with a catcher. He raised his AVG to .417. Lara, who had 1
HR among 172 AB in the DSL last year connected for his 1st HR this
year. Nothing notable about Villalona's line.
Odle made his first pro start after four relief appearances. He
doubled his career strikeout total as a pro. Loree, the only one of
four Scottsdale relievers to pitch more than an inning, added to his
team-leading strikeout total and brought his ERA below 1.00.
DSL: Giants defeated Devil Rays 8-7
Giants: 3B Carlos Quintana: 3 for 5, SO, SB, CS
Giants: LHP Mario Rodriguez: 5.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 1
HR--1 HB
The 20-year-old Quintana raised his AVG to .278 in 90 AB. He does not
seem like much of a threat on the basepaths with a 2/3 SB/CS line. A
five-run 4th inning helped raised the ERA of the 18-year-old Rodriguez
to 5.13. Today was a season-high in both BB and K. He has 42 H, 8 BB
and 26 K in 33.1 IP. >> Stay informed about: minor lines, 7/9/07 |

PCL wOBA leaders under 25, by ascending age:

Adam Jones 22 23% 8% .276 .361 22% .405

Jeff Clement 24 16% 12% .243 .291 18% .376
Ronny Cedeno 24 11% 12% .229 .399 23% .432
Timpner's 400+ BABIP line strikes me as very lucky. Schierholtz walks
too little, and he's no Billy Butler, but maybe he can play OF someday.

Let's hope it's caution. >> Stay informed about: minor lines, 7/9/07 |

No. He got hurt early in the season and has been out for 2 months. Just
rehabbing here and is going to the single A Brooklyn Cyclones to play a
few more games during the break. I suspect he'll be called up after the
AS break. Esp since they are down about 3 OFer's already. I still think
he'll be good and wish the Giants had made a play for him. Maybe Zito
for Milledge? >> Stay informed about: minor lines, 7/9/07 |
