AAA: Fresno lost to Sacramento 4-3
Fresno: CF Clay Timpner: 1 for 4, BB, SO
Fresno: RF Nate Schierholtz: 3 for 4, 2B, SB
Fresno: DH Brian Horwitz: 0 for 2, BB, HBP
Sacramento: DH JD Closser: 2 for 3, 2B, BB
Fresno: RHP Matt Palmer: 5.0+ IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 1 K, 1 HR
Fresno: RHP Billy Sadler: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 0 HR
Fresno: RHP Scott Munter: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 0 HR
Fresno: RHP Brian Wilson: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 0 HR
Sacramento: RHP Michael Madsen: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 0
HR
With three hits, Schierholtz raised his AVG to .340. Timpner and
Horwitz were the only other two Grizzlies to reach base multiple
times. This year there is not much difference between the walk rates
of Timpner and Horwitz, although Horwitz had had the much higher walk
rate in previous years. Closser, the 27-year-old journey now with the
A's organization, was the only RiverCat with multiple hits. He
entered the night with a .255/.360/.517 line.
Palmer had probably his worst start of the year in terms of control.
Throwing just 49 of 95 pitches for strikes, he issued five walks. His
K/BB ratio remains above 2.00, though. With scoreless relief, Sadler,
Munter and Wilson lowered their respective ERAs to 5.29, 3.20 and
3.44. Madsen's second PCL start was abbreviated, perhaps to
accommodate an upcoming appearance in the Futures Game.
AA: Connecticut at Harrisburg postponed due to rain
(doubleheader scheduled for tomorrow)
A+: San Jose lost to Modesto 1-0
San Jose: 3B David Maroul: 0 for 4, 3 SO
Modesto: 2B Eric Young Jr.: 2 for 4, 2B, SB
San Jose: LHP Paul Oseguera: 8.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 0
HR--1 WP
No one reached base twice for the Giants, who managed four hits and
three walks. Maroul now has as many SO as H. So his .252 AVG also
means he is striking out a bit more than one fourth of the time. The
Rockies Young stole his league-leading 42nd base.
Oseguera had his longest start of his pro career, his first start
going into the 8th inning. Still, he suffered the complete game loss
as he lowered his ERA below 3.00. He had a 13/5 GO/FO line. He now
has 90 H, 18 BB and 70 K in 100.1 IP. The official gametime
temperature was 109, and the pitcher's duel meant they were able to
hit the showers in just under two hours.
A-: Augusta lost to Hickory 13-4
Augusta: CF Michael McBryde: 2 for 4, HR, 2B, 2 SO
Augusta: 2B Juan Jean: 2 for 3, BB
Augusta: RHP Daniel Griffin: 4.0+ IP, 12 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 4 HR
Augusta: RHP Paul Lussier: 3.0 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 Er, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HR
McBryde connected for his 2nd HR and 11th double, but he still has a
sub-.650 OPS. The 21-year-old Jean, one of four other GreenJackets
with two hits, reached base three times to improve his OBP to .500
among 23 AB.
After having his best start of the year five days ago, Griffin had his
worst start of the year, raising his ERA to 3.68. I believe he
becomes the first Giants pitcher to allow 4 ER in a game this year.
Lussier started the season strong, allowing just 1 ER in April, but
his ERA has gotten worse every month since.
ssA: Salem-Keizer defeated Tri-City 7-1
(with a franchise record start of 14-3 now)
Salem-Keizer: RF Shane Jordan: 2 for 4, BB
Salem-Keizer: 2B Matthew Downs: 2 for 4, 2B, BB
Salem-Keizer: 1B Chad Rothford: 3 for 3, BB
Salem-Keizer: SS Sharlon Schoop: 2 for 3, SF
Salem-Keizer: LHP Craig Clark: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR
Salem-Keizer: RHP Steven Edlefsen: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K,
0 HR
Salem-Keizer: LHP Jason Neitz: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 0 HR
While reaching base safely in all four plate appearances, Rothford
raised his AVG to .296. Reaching base safely three times were Jordan
and Downs, who raised their AVGs to .300 and .279. Schoop raised his
AVG to .263.
Clark now has 14 H, 6 BB and 15 K in 16.0 IP over his four starts.
Edlefsen and Neitz combined for four perfect innings in relief,
lowering their respective ERAs to 2.45 and 1.13.
R: Giants lost to Angels 9-4
Scottsdale: 3B Angel Villalona: 1 for 4
Scottsdale: LF Joseph Dyche: 2 for 4
Scottsdale: C Eliezer Zambrano: 1 for 2, BB, HBP, SO
Scottsdale: RHP Jose Valdez: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 0
HR--2 HB, 1 BK
The 20-year-old Zambrano, playing just his fourth game in the U.S.,
led the Giants offense by reaching base three times. He has reached
base in 5 of 9 PA. Dyche, the only other Giant to reach base twice,
raised his AVG to .357. Villalona is listed because someone would
complain if I didn't. He did have his third straight game without an
error. The 16-year-old's OBP declined to .317 today.
Valdez, the second youngest pitcher on the team (after Australian
Cameron Lamb), may be the best pitching prospect on the team, but you
wouldn't know it by his ERA, which grew to 14.21 today. On the other
hand, he show some of his promise in that he struck out just nearly
half the fifteen batters he faced and allowed only two hits. In three
starts, the young fireballer has 7 H, 8 BB, 10 ER and 10 K in 6.1 IP.
DSL: Giants defeated Red Sox 10-1 (7 innings) in game 1
Giants: C Jesus Navarro: 2 for 2, 2 BB
Giants: RHP Javier Hernandez: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 0 HR
Navarro continues to have more walks than hits, as he has hit for a .
208/.348/.264 line in 53 AB. Making his second start, after beginning
the season with nine relief appearances, the 19-year-old Hernandez
lowered his ERA to 3.16.
DSL: Giants defeated Red Sox 6-2 (7 innings) in game 2
Giants: SS Ehire Adrianza: 3 for 4, 2 2B, CS
Giants: RHP Jorge Bucardo: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 0 2 HR
The 17-year-old Adrianza raised his AVG to .247. He showed decent
power today but has just a .326 SLG for the season. According to the
box score, the 17-year-old Bucardo improved his W-L record to 4-0.
Previously this year, he had allowed just 1 ER in 26.2 IP. What's
suspicious about the box scores is that that one earned run supposedly
came yesterday when he had 3.0 IP.
