Hi,
I'm a student, and I'm writing a paper on why people go to minor
league ball games. I'm also curious to know if you go for different
reasons when you take your families than when you go by yourself (or
with friends).
I'd love to hear what you have to say.
Thank you,

When I go with my family, its to engender a love of the history and
tradition of the American Pastime.

When I go by myself, it's to check out the babes.

I never go without my family. When I go, it is to spend quality time with
my children and enjoy a national pastime. The minor leagues seem more
purely commited to the love of the game. I often feel that the Major League
level has been polluted by greed avarice. The minor league stadiums are
also smaller, and therefore ensure a good seat without paying a small
fortune (see earlier comment about avarice).

why ask why? sitting in the sunshine watching a baseball game is just a
beautiful way to spend your time. i love watching high school ball. it doesn't
really matter to me if the kids are all that good, as long as they're good
enough to make the game look like baseball. it doesn't matter much whether we
win or lose, either.

i almost always go with the family, except if it's a day game and it would not
work well to pull the kids out of school. obviously, the point is to share the
time together, doing something we all enjoy and watching something aesthetically
beautiful. but if they can't be there, it's still baseball!

Thanks, this is very helpful.
It also reminds me of why I loved playing baseball as a kid.
If there were 2 minor league teams within driving distance, what
factors would you think about that would make you more likely to go to
see one team over another team?

i suppose i would rather see the higher-level team. driving distance would
probably be the second factor. i would say ticket price, but tickets are so
cheap for the richmond braves that a cheaper-but-lesser experience would not be
worth the savings.

i guess if i had a choice between the greenville braves and, say, the norfolk
tides, i might choose the braves' aa club over the mets' aaa club. except when
the r-braves were in norfolk.

The Birmingham Barons are roughly a 10 minute drive from my home (well, when
they're in town), yet we've been to far more Braves games in the past 5
years than theirs. Pity too, they have a decent stadium and hot dogs. The
later of which is my most motivating reason to not watch a game on tv.

Hey, these questions are getting harder. Smile

In order from most significant-

1) Quality of the stadium, and therefore quality of the view of the game.
I prefer to be close to the field.
2) Team is affiliated with a team that I like.
3) Level of fan excitement. When the fans are all asleep at the wheel,
it's hard to get excited. I love stuff like group chants, the wave,
Braves Tomahawk Chop, etc.
4) A player that I especially like to see - either a dominant pitcher or a
long ball hitter. Nothing more fun than a string of strikeouts with the
high hard one, or a long homer to deep center.

Now that I live in NC, I go catch the Hickory Crawdads (AA Pitt). Only $5 to
get in and the beer is alot less than the $7 beer at the Ted. It's actually
cold too!

More like Low A Hickory, but the management really gets the fans into
the game. The stadium used to have a gorgeous view out over the wooded
hillside with trees all around, but then they decided to strip the hill
over the RF fence and build a warehouse/distribution something or
another and now it's just not the same.

Easy daytrip to Asheville to catch the Tourists in one of the best
minor league stadiums in the country. It used to be Historic, but
they basically rebuilt Old McCormick and kept most of the good things.
Watch Bull Durham and you'll see Costner drive up to the old
stadium after being released by the Bulls when Nuke gets called
up to the majors.
