What Rule 5 players have gone on to fantastic careers? We got lucky with
Flores, but remember we got Speigner also. Why clear room on the 40 man to
take another one of these guys? If they take a right handed outfielder,
I'll scream.

Yes - so was Dan Uggla of the Marlins. There are some gems that get
logjammed in the various systems - mostly stones though.

I'd also add that this is conducted annually in the early December
timeframe. There's not a lot of baseball happening around that time
and as a few players who were Rule 5 picks panned out, it received
more visibility.

Josh Hamilton was a Rule 5 Pick last year.
George Bell was a rule 5 pick about 30 yrs ago.
Roberto Clemente was a Rule 5 pick back in the 1950's.
Jay Gibbons was a Rule 5 Pick from 2000.

More often than not, the guys picked don't contribute. But some do.
And besides, there's not much else going on....

Did they even have Rule 5 back in the days of Clemente and the reserve
clause? Dodgers kept Cimoli to draw the Italian's to the games. Bad
choice.

I may be advertising my ignorance of the Rule 5, but Roberto Clemente became
a Pirate in a trade with the Dodgers. Once he came up, he never went back.
Did they even have this back in the 50's? I apologize if being out of the
baseball loop for close to 30 years while we saw everyone from San Diego to
the Orioles being promised to DC got me not keeping up.
