The Braves need to sign Barry Bonds. The only limiting factor -
salary - has been effectively removed. Bonds has stated he is willing
to play for league minimum - what they're paying Gregor Blanco - and
that he'll even donate that to charity. Greg Norton is the team's
starting left fielder.
There is no reason other than collusion for Bonds not to be playing in
MLB now. There is no team that needs him notably more than Atlanta.

Your emotive irraitonalism notwithstanding, the Braves are starting
Greg Norton and Omar Infante in left. They need Barry Bonds.

Brandon Jones most certianly does.

What is wrong with KJ at 2B? If it's just swapping KJ for Infante or
Norton at 2B I fail to see the point.

Well, they could wait until Matt Diaz comes back. Or they could re-imagine
themselves, move Kelly Johnson back to left and field a real secondbaseman
at second.

As much as I would hate to see Bonds in Atlanta, I would support this move
if it did get Kelly away from second base. >> Stay informed about: Okay, I'll state the obvious |

I can't speak to KJ's defense this season, not having seen him. But the team
goes into tonight leading the league in ERA, so either he's not hurting that
much, or the team has the leeway to accept his defense if it means getting
an offensive bat at a defensive position.
As we learned with Chipper, moving an infielder to the outfield will not
automatically make him a better hitter.

KJ played left when he first came up and did a good job. He has been well
below average at second. His throws are mostly on target, but any ball that
he has to roam a little and reach will invariably kick off his glove. It is
maddening if you watch the games. I would much rather have Martin Prado at
second when he returns and shift KJ back to left. I don't think his field
position matters to his average, though he does seem to hit better down in
the line-up rather than at the top.

Being a fan of a baseball team stems from emotionalism, doesn't it?
Mark my words on this, if the Braves do something as stupid as sign
that ass clown Bonds, I will unsubscribe from this group (though I'll
probably still hang around the coffeeshop) and I will have watched my
last Braves game ever. >> Stay informed about: Okay, I'll state the obvious |

I think it'd be worth it just for the theater of it. Atlanta's baseball beat
writers seem like professions, so I don't think O'Brien or Rogers would
antagonize Bonds the way other writers have. But much more fun would be the
surely diametric teeth-grinding of Furman Bisher and Terence Moore, to be
settled only by a cage match. Meanwhile, the national sports media would try
to create controversies where there are none.
Bonds is certainly the most controversial player out there, but Bobby Cox
managed Gary Sheffield better than any other manager out there, and I think
he could handle Bonds in the clubhouse.
Now note, I'm not convinced Bonds will hit well. A lot of his value is
wrapped up in OBP, and a lot of that derives from pitchers fearing him and
pitching around him. If there's the slightest hint that he's no more than a
mere mortal power threat, I think that OBP will plummet. He could well start
hitting like his age. And his defense is ugly, but my understanding is that
Norton is no gazelle out there. So I think there legit concerns attached to
him, but our GM should at least give him a serious look.

KJ's a streaky hitter, I don't think it matters what slot, though he may
have difficulties at leadoff. But as maddening as I'm sure his fielding can
be, I'm struggling to see where it's hurting the team so badly that getting
an 800 OPS from your 2B is not worth it.
But again, I'm not able to see games, so it's hard for me to gauge KJ's
defense.

If he's ready to play for the minimum, what Braves have to lose? It's
not that our outfield is rocking.
