I knew it was a mistake to go turn the game on. I saw that they were ahead
6-2 and decided to turn on MASN to watch the rest of the victory. I knew it
was a mistake....

Hey there, meowing pappy, I'll share the blame with you, but I've seen the
bullpen keep the score enough that I won't take full blame. It was a pity
though. Bergmann deserved so much more.

Deal. At least Manny pulled Ayala right away, but it was not to be. Lots
of other opportunities also, apparently. Bergmann definitely deserved
better...
Although I feel bad for the Nats, I am liking that the Marlins came back
against the Mets, who now only have a 1.5 game lead. >> Stay informed about: I knew it was a mistake |

For 152 games I have been an Acta supporter, even holding out hope that he
could be in the top tier of managers up for manager of the year. But last
night he blew it. And because he clearly thought that Howard was the only
guy who was capable of hurting us. First of all, bring Bergmann out for the
seventh. See if he had anything left. There's no downside to that. Yes,
he realized quickly (or at least as quickly as all 19,966 people plus
everyone watching on TV) that Ayala didn't have it. But instead of bringing
in Albaladejo (who was warmed up already), he brought in Munoz and that
"forced" Philadelphia to switch who was pinch hitting for the pitcher and
bring up a power hitter. I thought at the time that he wasn't using Rauch
and Rivera because of them being tired from overuse, but clearly Rivera had
stuff to burn as he struck out the side on at most 14 pitches (18 total, 4
for the walk, didn't see the 9th myself). In the final analysis, I have to
give this loss to Acta. I think both of us are exonerated.

Maybe, but Bergmann did have 104 pitches thru 6 innings. No need to
hurt him. Kudos to Church who has been playing decently lately.

I think managers today get too hung up on the pitch count. Now they are
sending Bergmann to play winter ball because he missed games and needs the
work but we will take him out because he is over 100 pitches. What? I feel
like the Aflac duck. Let him pitch. This insane way of managing pitchers
is annoying, let them maybe pitch thru the 7th, bring on a set-up man for
the 8th, and a closer for the 9th. These starters pitch only once every 4-5
days....my God, don't overwork them.

I agree, the modern pitcher is treated like fine crystal. The 20 game
winner is disappearing and complete games are even becoming rare.
Satchel Paige or Bob Gibson would laugh at these guys.
BTW, where did you hear that Bergmann was playing winter ball? I think
he's taking the winter off.
