Post subject: No interest in this group? Worst I've seen in years! And who can blame anybody EXCEPT the NUTTING Family, the cheapskate owners (see inside)
Archived from groups: alt>sports>baseball>pitt-pirates (more info?)

(continued)....................from whom this team will be lucky to
ever escape. These cheap newspaper people who have learned to run
their newspapers (a dying institution if ever there was one in the
whirling swirling world of media) on the cheap due to falling
subscriptions and advertising revenue, are now going to practice their
cheapness on a major league baseball franchise.

Fresh off having taxpayers build a brand new state of the PNC art
stadium for them, this family is raking in a nice profit every year.

So long as stupid fans pay $40 for a ticket, $20 to park and $5 for a
hot dog, things are fine. Who cares about winning?

Change the managers, change the staff, change the adminstration,
change the General Manager and the President, even change a few
players around (hey we can stand a few more Derek Bell's and Raul
Mondesi's), but no body ever writes much about the ultimate
responsibility resting on the OWNERS, who after all are the people who
hire all of the above.

Bob Nutting, the guy who will ensure the Pirates stay in the cellar of
the NL Central. Watch how fast all these newer Pirates are now sold
off to "rebuild" again yet for the upteenth time.

That's the strategy Bob - rebuild and rebuild. There's always a few
fans who'll go for that and keep buying tickets.

Hey, and that Steinbrenner money at the end of the year coming from
the Yankees, that sure helps the old bottom profit line too does it
not? How much of that you putting into any real development?

As for the new management team in 2008, the Pirates finished with
another basement record, both AAA and AA teams played with few or no
upcoming stars and the draft of 2008 playing at Short Season A State
College finished with the worst record of the fourteen teams in the NY
Penn League! So much for a new direction.

These poor new guys in management - they have about zero chance to
turn this franchise around with Bob Nutting running the team.

Overly pessimistic?

No, I'm a Pirate fan who has been there the past fifteen years.

There's little interest in the group now because many (most?) folks on
here are also Steeler fans. Unfortunately for me, my football season
ended before it began (Bengals fan!).

I actually agree with the way that the team is going about rebuilding--
finally. I do not like that we will see losing year 17 and maybe 18
but I think that 2011 will be a very good year--compared to the last
20. If the team keeps drafting well and can continue restocking the
farm system, this could be a good deep young team in 2011 and
challenge for a title. In fact, 2010 may be close to 500 or maybe
even a little above. 2009 sure looks like a 110-loss season though.
It really depends on the pitching staff and replacing Bay's production
in the OF. (And a whole lot of other things too.)

So keep the faith but keep the heat on also. Kind of hard for me to
do that from Wyoming, but I'll do my best.
