The start of the season can be tough with bad weather and missed games so it
is hard for some clubs to get into a rhythm. But when the Cubs start
hitting up to their normal potential they will be a force to be reckoned
with.

It would also help if Wood and Prior decided to man up and play some ball.

Mark DeRosa cannot be expected to carry the club all season.

You may be the last Cub fan holding on to any sort of hope that those 2
stiffs have anything left in them.

It's not a matter of will, it's a matter of sore arms. They just can't
do it anymore. They're finished.

Or it could be they had a couple of fluke good years and they were never
that good to begin with. They rode the injury train for many years so
they wouldn't have to reveal their true pitching talent -- that they're
just average pitchers.

There have not been all that many average pitchers to record 20 K games.

I think that's being unfair to Wood. He has had stretches where he was a
very dominant pitcher, but then health problems intervened.

I wonder how often a no-hitter and a grand slam occur in the same game?
That makes it an interesting game even if the Cardinals were involved.

Who struck out the most men in a game? Nolan Ryan? Steve Carlton? How
about Kerry Wood? Roger Clemens?

A pitcher named Tom Cheney broke the record as a member of the 1962
Washington Senators. He fanned 21, beating the Orioles 2-1, even
though it took him 16 innings to do so. Is that record unfair because
he had to pitch an extra 7 innings? Definitely not. What pitcher do
you know in the past 20 years who can pitch past 9 innings?
By the way, Cheney could only win another 18 big league games in his
career.
So I guess there our some average pitchers that do have 20 or more
strikeouts.

And several that have 16 etc..

I'm guessing that throwing over 200 pitches may have had something to do
with that. LOL. He was probably injured the rest of his career.

Boy does that sound familiar. Sad
