Not to mention Renteria then intentionally smacking Fontenot in the face
on his "slide" without so much as a sideways glance from the umpires.

It will be hard to ignore when a National Audience heard every word but,
your right this is one dumb and bias Ump. I could'nt believe it when it
was played back. It even got old Joe Morgan's blood pressure up. It was a
shame to lose this game I guess Lou has lost all faith in Eyre or why else
bring in your closer to face four left handed hitters in the eight ining? >> Stay informed about: What the hell was THAT?! |

Because your starter got ran in the first inning, and it's not like we
had a whole helluva lotta depth in the first place??
I'm just guessing, mind you...

I think any fan would look at this and say the umps really mis-handled
this situation.
#1...Based on what happened the previous day, once Renteria was hit a
warning should have been issued to both teams. Then if it happened
again, that pitcher is gone.
There was no justification for throwing out Lilly just because the ump
"knew he was going to do it", plus no previous warning was given prior
to the game.
#2...Renteria should have been thrown out as soon as he gave Fontenot a
fore-arm. The second base ump clearly saw what happened and turned his
back and walked away.
Unfortunately the Cubs don't play them again so pay back will have to
wait until next year.
One thing I did like, was the team's attitude after the game. Even
though they blew it in the late innings (like so many times before)
they, according to interviews, remained very upbeat. I believe Ohman
said it was the best game they played this year, even though they lost.
(Assume he was referring to the team's spirit).
Even Dempster said, after losing the game, this team will not just
roll-over.
We will see.

He threw at his head. He should have thrown at his back, leg, arm or
buttock. If a pitcher throws at someone's head he is taken out of the
game for his own saftey. If a pitcher throws at somebody's head he is
lucky to make it out of the stadium alive.
Pitcher's note to self:
DO NOT throw at anyone's head. >> Stay informed about: What the hell was THAT?! |

Remember, that was the exact same pitch (high and inside) that hit
Soriano after he hit three homers the previous night....The two pitches
appeared identical. Soriano was hit on the upper arm and Renteria was
hit on the hand.
However, the pitcher hitting Soraino was not ejected and the ump just
warned both sides....That is what should have happened in this instance.
The umps mis-handled the entire situation and made it even worse after
Renteria intentionally hit Fontenot in the chops while stealing 2nd base.

Exactly. If the ump "knew he was going to do it," then maybe he
also should have "known how to do his job" and warned both teams
before the game. Since he didn't issue a warning even though he
supposedly knew it was coming, what does that mean - that he was
just waiting for the chance to toss someone out of the game? Aside
from being asinine, that's also pretty unprofessional.

The cynic in me wonders how much of Renteria leaving the game
was actually his hand and how much of it was "let's get him out of
there before the Cubs get the chance to pay *him* back." He got
hit on the left hand, right? The same hand/arm he then threw at
Fontenot's face? Apparently it wasn't hurting him all that badly then...

There is a special code of conduct for rookies, and Fontenot is just trying
to make the team. Had he done what you advocate, the benches would have
emptied, fights would have occurred on the field, perhaps injuries,
certainly some suspensions, especially Fontenot. How would that have helped
the Cubs? This is something the ump should have taken care of. >> Stay informed about: What the hell was THAT?! |

Yes, but cynics are usually frustrated or embittered romantics, so they
do have something in common with Cub fans.

No. It's a redundancy. p

Warnings are completely optional. If an umpire believes that a
pitcher has intentionally thrown at a batter, he can eject him
immediately without having given a warning. That's what happened
here.

I agree that there was inconsistency here on the umpires' part.
Either you're going to let the players settle it themselves (as they
seem to be saying by looking the other way when Renteria hit Fontenot)
or you're going to take charge of the situation yourself (as they seem
to be saying by the quick ejection of Lilly).

And warnings aren't new. Was reading an article on
Eddie Rommel (knuckleballer who retired fairly
young and became a long-time ump. 22 years in the
majors)
As far as I'm aware he was the first umpire to
hand out warnings when retaliation seemed likely.
Also tossed pitchers if he believed they intentionally
threw at somebody.
In other words, it seems likely that Rommel would
have handled things the same way. >> Stay informed about: What the hell was THAT?! |
