You know what? I think if this team had been less hampered by injuries (not
an excuse, you should be able to overcome a certain number of them) then
this team had a very good chance to do some real damage. The shear volume
and persistence of the injuries this team was hit with was insurmountable.
No team, not even the Yankees could have overcome that. In fact, they
almost didn't because of theirs. They are running away with the division by
default now that our team is in total disarray. Let's see how they do in
the post season. I'm sure this will sound like sour grapes, but I don't
think they'll fare well. I doubt our own team would have either.
We lost two key starting pitchers right out of the gate. We lost DiNardo,
who rightly or wrongly was expected to factor in as either a starter or
reliever. Arroyo was traded partly because it was felt we had too many
pitchers to carry on the roster. Lost our starting centerfielder very early
on, I'm not sure he ever got back to normal, certainly played below
expectations. Foulke...injured right from the start, though I'm not saying
he would have mattered, he was still part of the plan. Then as the year
went on, we lost Trot, Wake and Tek...key contributors, as well as injuries
to others...like Manny, no big deal huh?
There were obviously mistakes made and several below average performances
from many on the pitching staff as well. Yet given all of that, we were
still leading the division until August, when obviously the wheels came off
with one disaster after another. Shit happens to the best of them and it
came in heaping, steaming piles this season.
There will be changes. There always are...and should be. In this division,
to remain competitive, there must be. It should be interesting to watch
through the off season.
