There was plenty of blame to go around in yesterday's game. Maddux wasn't
sharp, the defense was worse than the 1 official error indicates & our
hitters couldn't figure out Miller.

As for the 3 prior losses, Maddux was shelled in one (after the 22 inning
nightmare & little sleep) but pitched very good games in the other 2.

I know the stats say we're not that bad in any area, maybe our relief
pitching, but we're still at or near the bottom in most of the hitting
categories & the sum of the parts is not getting it done. I'm afraid we are
seeing the result of ownership who continues to try to just get by rather
than pulling the trigger on a signing that could energize the team. It's
gotta be tough to play for a team where you keep thinking just a key
addition could put you into contention & all you get are Edmonds types with
the hope they will suddenly be rejuvenated by the SD climate.

It's still fairly early, but if this is the best we can do, why not bring
Headley & Antonelli up now & let them struggle against the pitchers they'll
face next year anyway? At least we'll be assured of another good pick in
the draft.

Greg would be the first to accept all of the blame, but reality suggests all
three are all fault. Greg has been inconsistent, but aside from the 9-run,
113-pitch outing, he hasn't been more than decent. Toss out that one, very
ugly game and Greg's ERA drops from 4.09 to 2.68. The D'backs are worse than
kryptonite for Maddog for some reason.

Still, his overall performance is much better than his 2-3 record suggests.
