how many times has a pitcher pitched a CG in which he faced *less* than 27
hitters and the game was *not* shortened by rain, darkness, or any other
extenuating circumstance?

It would have to be 25-26, wouldn't it?

Yes, someone's gotta score for him to take a loss.

Visiting team only - 24 for 8 complete innings or 25 and 26 for 9 plus
with a walk off something.

No, not correct. He couldn't face 24 hitters in 8 innings and still take
the loss. Minimum of 25. Somebody's gotta cross the plate.

Interesting, but wrong. Here, it obviously distinguishes a CG from the
second situation. Both qualify for a shutout, though.
