From 1997 - 2000, Erstad averaged more than 18 homers a season, since then
he has had only one season of double digits, a plebian 10 in 2002. During
1997 - 2000, his slg % was consistently in the .480s or better. Since
then, his high was .389 in 2002. These are terrible dropoffs ... is his
bat over the hill? Have running into outfield fences taken their toll? Has
his big contract lessened his drive? He is certainly the least power
hitting 1B in baseball ... should he be traded for a better 1B, to a team
that needs a defensive outfielder?

They took out the juiced balls a couple of years ago to give the
pitchers a little more of an edge. That's what happened to Erstad and a
whole bunch of marginal H.R. hitter's power stats.
