As opposed to his other choices, yeah, but I'd like a leadoff hitter
who draws more walks.

Which generally means that Scott is everyday rightfielder, unless he
has Garneritis and insists on putting Burke/Lane out there.

That's only a good thing because he doesn't have any other options. Pence
doesn't walk near enough, and strikes out too much for the leadoff spot.
With his power and RBI potential, he needs to be in the 5-hole (or 3-hole if
Berkman doesn't hit any better than he has this year). With his speed,
though, he's the closest thing Cooer has to a leadoff hitter, so he'll have
to do.

Then Cooper needs to get better production from his RFer. Playing Berkman
at 1b full-time will keep Lamb on the bench. Once again, it's a case of him
not having a lot of choice. If Luke Scott can produce consistently,as he
did the last half of '06, then I would have no problem with Berkman at 1b
everyday.

And Widdingd? is everyday 3rd baseman, leaving Jason Lane to find
another team when his contract runs out this year. Shouldn't be hard to
do with almost .300 batting avg.

There is a reasonable chain of events that could lead to Wigginton
being the Astros starting secondbaseman in 2008.

(let Loretta walk, resign Lamb, Burke falls on his face in spring
training)

The Wiggonton thing seemed to me to be an insurance policy type deal.
They knew thay didn't want Ensberg long term. They didn't have another
MLB 3rd baseman under control (Lamb's a FA). So rather than be held
over a barrel by a free agent, they traded for Wigginton.

I think they still could do a free agent deal and then trade
wigginton... or make him part od a deal up upgrade via trade. A lot
depends on the who and when of the next GM.

ARod to the Astros?

You forgot "Wigginton suddenly and remarkably becomes at least marginally
competent defensively at secondbase."

FYI, all 2nd basemen in 25 or more games ranked by Zone Rating:
(Actually, almost all period. I can't mass delete the ones I don't want).
You can find Wigginton near the bottom with a .740 rating.

If you look at his career numbers, he isn't much more below average at
2B than he is at 3B,

Range Factor is largely discredited. How does he look with Zone Rating or
Ultimate Zone Rating? He is best fit as a utilityman.

Oh, I'll agree with that, However, offensively, I'd rather have
Winnginton at 2B and Lamb at 3B than Burke at 2B and Wigginton at 3B,
You can always make a defensive replacement late in the game.

Offense is more important than defense, but how much better than Burke would
Wiggy be? Burke was quite decent last year.
