That "dollar dog" thing isn't as desparate as it sounds. Several teams
have the same promotion. Texas and Minnesota come to mind immediately,
and there are a couple others that I can't remember off the top of my
head.

Shoot, with the price raping that is so common for food and drinks in
ballparks these days, it's actually kinda nice to have a reasonable
inexpensive alternative. I'd like to see the price of food come down
in ALL the ballparks all the time.

The minor leagues is where its at. Binghamton Mets have 2 for Tuesdays
when the usual $4.00 beers are 2 for one (soda too, but who really
cares). Thursday are Family & Friends Four pack (4 tickets, 4 dogs, 4
sodas) $24. Some Thursday are also 2 for 1 beers. 24 Fireworks nights.
Kids eat free at Sunday games. Dogs are $1 all the time.

You may have gotten the A's broadcast from a King City station, well
south of Monterey Bay--so far from here that I can't get their signal
at all.

True. It's not the $1 hotdogs. It's the $1 or $2 game tickets.

Totally agree about the minor leagues. Not only are they more
affordable, but if you like to watch baseball, they may not be "the
best" but they're damn fun, too.

I agree as well. AAA baseball is a great watch.

I'm stunned that there will be a AAA team in Reno next year, in a new
ballpark on the river, just 2 blocks downstream from the casinos.

I'm not sure they're doing that anymore (the cheap tickets), but I
haven't checked in a couple years, so I could be mistaken.

Maybe it's not working. I don't know what their regular price is, but let's
say it's $6, then for the $2 tix, they have to draw 3 times as many fans to
break even. For the $1 tix, they have to draw 6 times the fans. And then
you'll no doubt have a bunch of fans who normally buy more expensive tix but
on Wed night they'd buy the cheap tix because the savings is too big to
ignore. It wouldn't surprise me if they actually lose money on that night.

This wouldn't be so bad if the all-star game were played like a real
game and not a pageant.

How the players would get elected, I don't know, but it should be
actual stars and not a popularity contest. It is inconceivable that a
rookie can be in the all star game. Requiring at least one player from
each team is dumb.

The managers and coaches should be similarly chosen, not just whoever
won the league championships and their favorite buddies. And the
managers should play the game as if it was a real team. If someone
doesn't get a chance to play, then too bad, there's always next year.
These are stars after all, they'll be chosen again next year (assuming
they're still active).

Then we would have a game worth watching, and possibly worthy of
determining home field advantage.

Yeah, but that will never happen so long as 75% of the players on the field have
no interest in home-field because their team has no chance of contending.

The rule is *only* there to hype the meaningless game itself. It's definitely
number 1 on my list of worst rules in sports, hands down.

How is having the All-Star game determine home-field for the World Series
worse than the traditional alternative, which was simply alternating leagues
every year? What's so beautiful about that mindless alternative?

I'm not saying that having the All-Star game decide it is a good idea. But
I am saying that simply alternating leagues every year is a worse idea.

Nope. They're both bad rules, but I'd rather it simply be chosen "randomly"
(i.e., alternating) than through some false competition (which gives an
advantage to the stronger league even if the strongest team is in the other league).

Fair enough, although home field means practically nothing in baseball.

http://tinyurl.com/4tg7ea

Particularly in an era where we see so many World Series sweeps.

The only reason that making the All-Star game affect home field advantage
doesn't drive me nuts is because simply alternating between the leagues each
year is absolutely mindless.
