This is hysterical, because my friends and I used to play line ball
all the time (also called 'fast pitching') and go though a team's
lineup batting from the correct side of the plate. I am also left
handed, so I lost a lot.

The '77 team was a good one with Buckner, Murcer and Biitner all
left handers. When I batted as Buckner I even walked with a limp,
and when I got a hit I would do a limp-run to 1st base, even though
(as everyone knows) there are no bases in line ball.

Jones for Taguchi would be a nice deal. Unfortunately I don't see that
happening anytime soon. One thing about Jones, he does have a
career OPS in the .770 range. He started out slowly last year too
and ended up having a reasonable year. He hasn't gotten untracked
yet this year but I don't think its unreasonable to think he can put
up
a .830 to .850 OPS the second half.

I don't know that much about Soto. If he could come up, play good
defense and hit about .250 that would be great. I think Blanco is
going
to be back soon. His return should help our catching situation.

Overall I don't think we are too bad off as far as position players
go.
I'd be more interesting in picking up a spot starter/middle reliever.
Rich Hill is starting to hit some bumps in the road and I still think
Ted Lilly is pitching over his head.

Baker was a complete moron, probably the worst manager in the
history of the game. It hard to imagine how any could be worse than
him. As for Baylor, I don't know I ever posted anything about him.

Yeah, what an idiot he is. Loses players like Giambi, Mulder,Hudson
and Zito and then can't win a world series.

I wonder if line ball is played outside of Chicago.

When I introduced Chicago's softball to friends at college, they were
amazed that such a thing existed.

Is that the 16 inch variety that I grew up with? Do they still play that in
Chicago? There used to be leagues in most parks almost every week night.

What's with the sudden disdain for facts (stats), Gillman?

An average of 92 games per year over four seasons, and two division
titles.

The real reason for 16 inch softball in Chicago is because it can be
played on smaller baseball fields. Many Chicago parks are nestled
within a neighborhood and are not that big. People would be hitting a
12" ball through the neighbors windows. With a 16" ball it's harder for
people to hit the ball out of the park.

I was amazed when I was first introduced to it as well. I was at
college at UIUC and that's what all the Chicago area natives wanted to
play. I couldn't understand its appeal then, and 25 years later, I
still don't.

>Same here. And try buying/finding a 16 inch ball in Texas.

Because baseball/softball was meant to be played with a glove on your
hand. That's been recognized everywhere in the world, except Chicago,
for over a century now.

If you can keep a bat and ball in your trunk, why can't you keep your
glove in there too?
