| Is there any doubt left in anybody's mind? Barry Bonds steps to the
plate. A crowd of 35,000 booing their lungs out. One swing of the bat
and Barry launches a majestic home run into the 7th row of the upper
deck at RFK stadium. Barry dramatically silences the entire goddam
crowd with his 706th. Baseball dont get no better than this folks. We
are witnessing GREATNESS!

That's for sure. Isn't pharmaceutical research wonderful? Just
think about what Babe Ruth, or, Pete Rose, could have done with
steroids?

Bonds is playing exhibitions to boost season ticket sales for next year.
David Ortiz is deep in a pennant race hitting three consecutive dingers
in two games.
The irony of all this is Bonds vs. the Nationals. San Francisco is
hurting for money since SBC Park is privately financed. MLB held a gun
to Washington DC's head demanding a publicly financed ball park. In a
privately financed ball park, the MLB owners might only get $50 million
for the Nationals instead of the $300 or $400 million they will get in a
publicly financed park.

If he only has to face white players, he just might do it, too.
Well, maybe not the pitching part.

Just think what a sober Babe Ruth with normal appetites for foods
could have done, or think where Petey would be had he not cheated.

He broke a rule, and paid the prescribed penalty. I wouldn't say he
"cheated" -- that implies, to me, doing something to gain an unfair
advantage in competition.

But isn't it cheating if he did something to give the other team an unfair
advantage? Perhaps the team he is betting on? Let's say he leaves a
starter or reliever in just one batter too long, knowing he's out of gas,
just so he can make some money on the game. That, to me, is cheating.

You make it sound as though you think that Bonds would be some kind of
failure if he only manages to establish himself as the second greatest
player in history. That seems like an unreasonable standard to me.
Besides, if Bonds manages to match Ruth's career OPS+ and pitching record
he won't be as good as Ruth was; he'll be substantially better. Bonds
already has a good sized lead over Ruth in career length- he has more than
200 more games played and nearly 10% more PA- and that advantage would
only grow as he was raising his career OPS. Bonds also has a substantial
advantage in baserunning and defense, and he's clearly played in a more
competitive environment. I think that you could make a reasonable case
that Bonds has surpassed Ruth's career value. I don't know for sure that
it would be correct, but it wouldn't be an argument that could be
dismissed out of hand.

If you exclude a blacks who were also latino which was done in ruth's
