Post subject: New to fantasy baseball...what do you think of my first ever draft?
Archived from groups: rec>sport>baseball>fantasy (more info?)

Okay, I'm not entirely new to fantasay baseball. I ran a league from
'84-'89, back when we relied on the latest issue of The Sporting News to
decide who the winners were. The league ended when TSN decided to stop
including box scores in its weekly issues (and so did my subscription to
TSN).

Anyway....this is a ten team league. We start 17 players with 7 on the
bench. Scoring is pretty standard based on what I have seen from other
leagues. I had the first pick of the draft, which usually ends up being my
downfall when it comes to fantasy football:

1. Alex Rodriguez (SS). I'm a bit concerned that he won't play shortstop,
but I believe he is a strong number one pick.
2. Jim Thome (1B) I wanted another strong bat to go here, and Tome was the
best first baseman left at this point.
3. John Smoltz (P) Our league was very bullpen happy for some reason. I
picked up the last potential 40 save guy, even though he is a bit of a
gamble with his age.
4. Magglio Ordonez (OF) I'm not too confident with this one. I'm hoping he
has a career year!
5. Randy Johnson (P) Another gamble. I'm trying to trade him as we speak.
6. Tim Hudson (P) I certainly cannot believe that Hudson was still
available in round 6, but it is painfully obvious that everyone in my league
wants him. I've gotten trade offers from six different managers already.
He may end up going somewhere else if I can find a stud infielder.
7. Javier Vazquez (P) Strikeouts.........
8. Ichiro Suzuki (OF) He was the best outfielder left at this point.
9. Jeff Kent (2B) Kent may be over the hill, but most of the draft reports
I have seen have him listed as a top 5 second baseman.
10. Shawn Green (OF) I'm a Dodger fan.
11. Mike Lowell (3B) I'm satisfied to get a 30 HR third baseman in the 11th
round.
12. Johan Santana (P) I may have made a mistake in drafting so much
pitching so early, but I get to see a lot of Twins games. I like what I've
seen from Santana.
13. Jason Kendall (C) My last starter. I was going to wait and just go
for whatever was available for catchers in the late rounds, but they went
like hotcakes in round 12.
14. Mark Redman (P) More pitching....
15. Christian Guzman (SS)-released to make room for Joe Mauer (C)
16. Miguel Batista (P)- released to make room for Joe Nathan (P)
17. Frank Thomas (1B) Another gamble, but it was the 17th round!
18. Charles Johnson (C)-Traded for Jose Reyes (SS)
19. Luis Castillo (2B)
20. Odalis Perez (P)
21. Vinicio Castilla (3B)
22. Kelvim Escobar (P)
23. Craig Biggio (OF)
24. Darren Erstad (OF)-Traded for Arthur Rhodes (P)

Here is my tentative lineup. Any thoughts?

1B-Jim Thome

OF-Miguel Ordonez
OF-Ichiro Suzuki

hehe...well, I never claimed to be in a league of experts.

There are a couple of strong players in the league...the commish is a two
time champion, and one other player is a three time champion. This is the
league's seventh year (with a one year hiatus last year because the commish
was having health problems). Six years and only three different champions
sounds to me like the skill level of the players isn't very evenly
distributed.

The Johnson for Reyes trade may have been made in a rush by my opponent. It
was about two days after Reyes pulled his hamstring, and he really needed a
catcher. He'd been trying to lure Kendall from me, but I made him settle
for Johnson.

I just agreed to a trade to send Johan Santana packing in exchange for Alex
Sanchez. It's currently pending commissioner approval (he puts it up to a
league vote if anyone objects). It might not seem a fair trade, but the
team on the other side of the deal has a ton of speed and no depth in
pitching. Even if it does make my pithing staff really shallow, I am eying
a ton of free agents at the moment who could easily be a quick fix. Plus,
I'm glad to not have the gamble of starting Santana given his offseason
surgery.

Redman was the guy I wanted to deal for Sanchez. My opponent insisted on
Santana. No, I gotta hope that both Escobar (who I'm not entirely sold on)
and Odalis (I'm a Dodger fan, remember?) supplant Redman!

Thanks for the comment! I can't wait for the season to start...

Why would you want to offer either Santana or Redman for Sanchez? In my
estimation, Sanchez is barely above replacement level. Granted, he'll get a
boatload of steals, and more runs than last year, but he'll offer nothing in
AVG or RBI. Santana and Redman both will be solid pitchers. Sounds to me
like a bad deal for you.

A large part of the rationale behind that deal was simply the fact that I am
set at pitching with a bit of depth to spare, and the one area I was
severely lacking was base stealing. I don't count on Sanchez being a
starter all year long, but he is going to get some plate time based on when
my other players have the day off or if one of my gambles doesn't pay off.
I expected about a .280 clip with Sanchez with perhaps 80 runs and 40-50
steals when I made the trade. I kept looking at Santana with doubt given
his sub-par spring performance added together with his offseason elbow
surgery. I guess I've seen too many pitchers go bad because of offseason
surgery, and I'm already risking enough with Randy Johnson.

Thanks for the comments, though.
