Speaking another language is not a sign of intelligence, but of
course, you wouldn't know that. And sorry bud, but I lived in Montreal
for many years and speak French quite well. I choose not to, however,
and for that, and many economic reasons, I moved out of la belle
province many years ago.

in MLB, and were headed to World Series), and 8 work stoppages in 30
years, who cares ? Pack it up.

Minor league teams are all leaving, Canadian Baseball League failed
miserably, we just don't care. Not our game anymore. Was for a while,
but we stopped caring a whle back.

I have stated and will continue to state that baseball in Canada isn't
failing as badly as nay-sayers like you would have us believe. True, three
of four Triple A teams have left, but the Winnipeg Goldeyes had the highest
attendance in the independent Northern League (over 7,000) had the second
highest attendance in the Class A Northwest League (3,685) and in the four
seasons of the team's existence attendance has increased by 25%. So why did
the old Canadians, the Cannons, and the Trappers leave? Certainly it isn't
"just" attendance -- if it were then either the Las Vegas 51s and the
Colorado Springs Sky Sox would have moved to Red Rock Texas not the Trappers
because both of those teams. The fact that a Canadian team generates most
of it's revenues in Canadian dollars while most of their expenditures are in
US dollars doesn't help. The travel budget for the Trappers must have been
quite high since the Cannons moved -- the next nearest team was Tacoma and
the bulk of the other teams were over 1,000 miles away. Too long for a bus
trip. Deep pockets from potential US owners and the sometimes unstable
nature of the PCL (the Cannons moved to Albuquerque to become the Isotopes
because the Albuquerque Dukes moved to Portland in 2000 to become the
Beavers, and heaven knows where the original Beavers moved to because team
histories on PCL websites are quite frankly a joke) finishes the picture.

As for the Canadian Baseball League, their problems in the front office are
well documented. Beyond the fact that there were too few teams ( spread
over too large an area (2,500 miles), I don't know what you can say about a
sports league that doesn't offer season ticket packages, does no
advertising, and no promotion within the community because the teams weren't
owned by local people but by the league. Beyond that in Saskatoon in
particular we'd had four different minor sports franchises (three basketball
teams and a baseball team) go belly up because of bad management -- in all
but one case bad management at the league level. The CBL didn't look any
different... and it wasn't. As I said in an earlier post the guys who
started that League couldn't organize an orgy in a whorehouse.

A new Canadian independent league is being formed. The Western Canada
Baseball League will have eight teams in British Columbia and Alberta.
There will be two divisions meaning manageable travel costs, a salary cap,
and local ownership. Beyond that not much is known, but their business
model looks promising.
