I had the ever-so-slightest glimpse of hope that we could somehow still
catch up in the WC, but with the loss today (thanks, Matt Mantei) and with
Philly leading their game today I think it's about time to borrow one of
those forks from "Detour Dan".

Judging by the lack traffic on this newsgroup it looks like most everybody
else already given up as well.

Time to start looking forward to next year.

I've pretty much come to accept that the playoffs aren't in the cards for the
Dbacks. However, this newsgroup hasn't had much traffic at all this year. All
of the good-weather fans from 2001 have jumped ship.

I still dont know why, but this newsgroup NEVER has much traffic.
Either there is another location where all the dbacks go and post, or
internet posting is just not a thing they do in arizona.

There's a message board on the "official" team site, but it seems to
be inhabited by teenage girls and housewives. Virtually no baseball
talk going on.

It's more the latter. There's not much overlap between
cybergeeks and baseball fans around here. There's a
message board system linked to the d-bax website, but many
of the people posting there are unlikely to have heard of
Usenet or even groups.google.com.

Here's a sorted listing of the current article counts in
the alt.sports.baseball.* heirarchy:

alt.sports.baseball.bos-redsox 4517
alt.sports.baseball.ny-yankees 3880
alt.sports.baseball.sf-giants 2585
alt.sports.baseball.chicago-cubs 2256
alt.sports.baseball.kc-royals 1280
alt.sports.baseball.sea-mariners 1122
alt.sports.baseball.ny-mets 910
alt.sports.baseball.cinci-reds 814
alt.sports.baseball.stl-cardinals 809
alt.sports.baseball.atlanta-braves 655
alt.sports.baseball.phila-phillies 599
alt.sports.baseball.la-dodgers 503
alt.sports.baseball.chi-whitesox 427
alt.sports.baseball.tor-bluejays 412
alt.sports.baseball.sd-padres 382
alt.sports.baseball.mn-twins 378
alt.sports.baseball.pitt-pirates 327
alt.sports.baseball.oakland-as 306
alt.sports.baseball.calif-angels 250
alt.sports.baseball.montreal-expos 205
alt.sports.baseball.detroit-tigers 202
alt.sports.baseball.balt-orioles 177
alt.sports.baseball.cleve-indians 125
alt.sports.baseball.mke-brewers 121
alt.sports.baseball.az-diamondbacks 86
alt.sports.baseball.texas-rangers 79
alt.sports.baseball.fla-marlins 55
alt.sports.baseball.houston-astros 45
alt.sports.baseball.card-traders 36
alt.sports.baseball.tb-devilrays 23
alt.sports.baseball.memorabilia 19
alt.sports.baseball.col-rockies 11
alt.sports.baseball.minor-leagues 9

So it could be worse. We could be below the baseball card
and memorabilia groups...

It'd be interesting to correlate this to geography and
the age of the teams themselves, but someone else can
do it.

At least last year it seemed to be inhabited mostly by teenage girls
drooling over their favorite players.

And this newsgroup isn't carried by Google Groups anymore, only the
crossposts show up there.

Well, I said a few days ago that this group was more active than those for
the other three most recent expansion teams, and I guess this bears that
out.

I'll let someone else speculate about the apparant Internet illiteracy in
Texas. Sad.

Wow, the Rockies are worse off than I thought. Maybe newsgroups dont work
well at high altitude.

Speaking of which, this group is not archived by groups.google.com, even
though it generates more traffic than groups that *are* carried. If you
look for content in this group using Google groups, you'll find only
messages that were crossposted to groups Google still archives.

I think we need to request Google to resume archiving this group:

http://www.google.com/googlegroups/help.html#added

14. How can I ask for a newsgroup to be added?

Send a message to groups-support RemoveThis @google.com that includes the name of
the newsgroup you would like to have added to the archive. Your request
will be reviewed, and if it's accepted, the newsgroup will be added
within a few days. Each request is evaluated to determine the value of
the information the newsgroup contains, but there are no guarantees that
a given newsgroup will be added. Please do not send more than one
request to add a particular newsgroup as this slows the evaluation
process and does not affect the ultimate outcome.

Note: Google maintains an archive of messages posted to Usenet, but we
do not create the newsgroups that appear there. That is done through a
process described in detail here. Once your newsgroup has been
officially created and approved by the usenet community, you can request
that it be added to the archive in Google Groups. It's important to note
that Google cannot add newsgroups that are only available on one
specific news server, unless the administrator of that news server
decides to propagate those newsgroups throughout the world-wide usenet.

Hell, this alone should convince Google to resume archiving the group.
Once it's available via Google, it should get more traffic.

Of course, the only other of those teams to have won a World Series
promptly sold off the franchise, pissing off a *lot* of people in the
process. And Jeffrey Loria's ability to poison a market seems
unparalleled.

I wonder if that could have more to do with the fact that to Texans,
only football matters, or it may be related to Texans' geocentrism. I
took a business trip to Dallas a couple of years ago and based on what I
read in the papers or saw on TV, absolutely *nothing* happened anywhere
else in the world during my stay there.

> Nearest airport. cvg-reds? bwi-orioles?

Wow. I dunno who gave me MLW, then. We're using MLW to designate
Milwaukee in our network. I guess we're unlikely to have any sites in
Monrovia, Liberia (the airport *really* designated by MLW).
