Yes, how many of our best players will be back? Consensus seems to be
that Vazquez won't, but likely with MLB looking to cut the Expos'
payroll to $45 mil US we all know others will be gone. Vlad is a
possibility, the uncertainty about where to play may hurt him a lot,
after all he wants nothing to do with Washington. Then there's Vidro,
Cabrera, and Livan Hernandez. Not much they can do about it. Barrett
will be asked about, too. Armas, even with his injury.

Will September 28 be Vlad's last game in Montreal? I hope not.
Surely Omar can tell MLB where to go and keep his team together,
without having to return to 1996.

Technically, his last game in Montréal (as an Expo at least) would have
been Sept. 17. I was there and saw the crowd shower him with love. But I
share your intended sentiment ...

No, he can't. With Majopr League Baseball controlling the purse strings,
he's at their beck and call. I'm one of those who believe MLB will
completely gut the payroll if the team doesn't agree to split at least
some games next season.

What do you base this statement on? His agent (and Mom) have been
reportedly talking to Jim Beattie and Mike Flanagan, the GMs of the
Baltimore O's. One of those gms was the scout who originally signed
Vlad is is a good friend of the family.

Vlad's agent and Vlad have made it quite clear that his biggest
problem with staying in Montreal is the chance of a move to
Washington. Where do people get the idea Vlad wants to play in
Baltimore? I have seen nothing but Usenet rumours posted to that
effect, nothing on radio, tv, or reliable newspaper reporters. The
guy who signed Vlad (Ferreira [sp?]) is with the Marlins but so is
Loria (ugh!). LA spurned Vlad as a kid and is still paying for it.
Cincy and ChiSox have made enquiries about talking to his agent but
neither has gotten a response, so I expect any rumours from Cincy or
ChiSox to be the same as with Baltimore, wishful thinking.

Vlad is letting his agent negotiate with Minaya but Minaya is in the
running for the Cincy GM job, so who knows what is really going on.
Will Baltimore offer F. Robinson their mananger job to 'lure' Vlad??
Alou is in San Fran and Vlad likes him.

Whoever gets Vlad (Montreal) will have to pay over $12 mil US a
season. I doubt most teams can afford that. MLB may have to cough it
up to keep him in Montreal. After all, any prospective owner would
want the most fun player in baseball on his team. NYY can't get him,
I sincerely hope, as does Vlad. I have no idea which teams beyond
Montreal that he really wants to suit up for. It's purely a guessing
game and as we all know baseball is all about indecision.

The move, specifically, to Washington, or just the possibility of a move?

Anyway, thanks for an insightful analysis of the situation.

Unfortunately his analysis is wrong. The Baltimore Sun, Washington Post
and ESPN have reported talks with Baltimore.

Vlad will either:

1) Stay in Montreal because he's the kind of guy who likes comfortable
surroundings. His contract can easily be written to make him a free
agent if the team moves.

2) Go to Baltimore as reported by the three above sources.
(Baltimore's next manager will be Eddie Murray or Sam Pezzolzo)

3) Follow Minya or Robinson. Robinson won't stay if they shed players.
He'll retire or go back to his league job. Minya is most likely going
to the Mets. Vlad will not follow him to NY.

Longshots for Vlad:

4) Play for a team with a Latino Coach, such as the Giants or Royals.

Doubt it. ESPN rumours fly faster than the Blackbird. Washington
Post has been reporting for 10 years that the Expos will be 'moving to
Washington for next year'. Blatimore Sun may have some news but once
again what source, somebody with a burnt tv dinner and no cell phone
coverage?

Sure, Vlad's agent may listen to offers from Baltimore but the guy
will get calls from ChiSox, San Fran, and likely 7 other teams too, if
they haven't already made those calls.
