Well, evaluating 19-year-old's playing in the NY Penn league is
probably about as inexact a science as you can have but hey, Luis
Samoza put up a .915 OPS this year, good OBP, good slugging, looks to
possibly have some potential. Which, when you're trading the last 30
games of Mark Kotsay, is probably as good as you're going to get.
Another good job by Frank Wren.

Tehre had been rumblings that the team was thinking of re-signing
Kotsay. I suspect he'd have cost more than he was worth, so this likely
indicates they're willing to commit to Blanco/Schafer in CF

Given Schaefer's been putting up awfully good numbers over the last
month (that first month back from suspension was pretty brutal), he
probably has a good chance at getting the starting CF job, if he stays
with Atlanta. I still expect him to be traded for a pitcher in the
offseason.

I might have expected that a few months ago, or had they kept Kotsay,
but I bet he'll be in the mix now.

There's no room for Schaefer, Anderson and Blanco on the same roster. We
need a HR hitter somewhere out there. We can't count on the stenchmeister
for that any more. >> Stay informed about: Something for Nothing |

I don't think all three will be there, but there's no reason for us not
to take advantage of their depth and figure out who'll be the best
player(s) to have out there.

What the Kotsay deal tells me is that Frank Wren is looking at 2010
and beyond. I don't think they're working on the "turn Frenchy back
around and put it back together next year" false assumption any more.

Agreed. Too many uncertainties for 2009 anyway. If they can magically turn
Schafer into a good pitching prospect then great, but i don't think they can
do that. So I think 2009 will see an outfield competition for 2010.
