Have you ever seen an ump get hurt so bad as that poor fellow tonight? I
don't count the fellow that died at the Reds opener years ago. I mean from
something happening in a game.

Let's all say a prayer for umpire Kerwin Danley today!

I don't think I've ever seen ANYTHING like that before. I'd love to
know exactly what happened - it looked like Martin either lost the ball
or took a nap just as Penny let go of the pitch - that's just about the
only way to explain a catcher being so late reacting to a pitch.

And poor Danley - all he could do was look the ball right on in....
here's wishing him a speedy recovery!

Afer this, the umpires should review the way they set up to call pitches
- they have the inside corner covered, but it leaves them awfully
exposed to errant pitches/foul balls.

I was thinking there was some late movement on the ptich. Or Martin
was crossed up on it. But I agree with you, I've never seen a catcher
that late either unless he's expecting a different pitch.

Yeah and with a 96mph fastball he was toast the minute it glanced off
Russel's glove.

Martin said he was looking for a curve ball and couldn't react in time to a
96 mph high fastball.
