Time is not a factor in any way. Doug Melvin and Billy Beane turned
the A's Brewers around in three years with no more money than the
Pirates had. The key is to have the right people making the right
decisions and only time will tell if Huntington is the right person.
The Pirates could have a .500 team in 2 years if they make the right
choices.
The better questions are; will the Pirates ever approach reach .500 as
long as they have below average hitters at five starting positions?
Answer: no
Will the Pirates reach .500 if they commit the bulk of their payroll
to unexceptional middle infielders? Answer: no
Will the Pirates reach .500 by investing limited resources in high
risk, moderate to low upside pitchers and perusing a failed strategy
of building around pitching and defense? Answer: NO!
