On June 23, during the third game of a four game sweep at the hands of
Detroit, Andruw Jones started coming around. He wouldn't break his
"no hits" slump until the next day, but on the 23rd he drew two
unintentional walks. Since that point Andruw has posted the following
numbers:
276/386/586. That's a 972 OPS over the course of 70 plate
appearances.
Over that same time frame, in 43 plate appareances, Willie Harris has
hit 194/326/194. Over his last 90 plate appearances, immediately
after his 3 hit performance vs. the Cubs (June 2) he has hit
278/360/342.

In case *you're* actually watching the games, the end of Andruw's half-year
slump has coincided directly with a change in approach, hitting up the
middle and to right rather than bulldoggedly trying to pull every damn
pitch. The homerun tonight was <gasp!> to right field. And as I said earlier
it would take the embarassment of being below .200 (for nearly two weeks)
before the mountains moved and he decided to listen to the coaches. You
won't find me rooting against his (the team's) success, only angry and
frustrated at his belligerence.
On the other hand, I'm perplexed by your constant rooting against Willie
Harris who is at .338/.412 with 14 stolen bases and has been a godsend. The
guy plays hard and hungry. If he goes 4-4 tomorrow night, are you going to
post a retraction?

Robert, one of us wanted to bench Andruw for Willie Harris. The other
pointed out that that was a stupid idea. If Harris goes 4-4 tomorrow
I will have nothing to retract, because I, unlike you, don't think one
or two games is really a meaningful sample by which to judge a player.
I said "shut up and let Andruw play his way out of it." Andruw has
played his way out of it. Now you can run around all day talking
about how it's only because he was so selfish that he couldn't stand
the embarrassment or whatever it is the voices are telling you this
week but the fact of the matter is Andruw is playing like Andruw, and
Willie Harris is playing like Willie Harris. Luckily Bobby Cox
understands both players and their abilities and is using them
effectively.

One of us saw nothing wrong in Andruw drowning below .200 because of his
obstinance for half a season while two other guys were hitting 160 points
higher. The other one of us wanted his butt glued to the bench until he got
the point. If you were his manager, I take it you would keep stupidly
patting him on the back and telling him to pull the ball better.

Whatever the motivation, he has only come out of the slump by doing what he
should have been doing from the start. Not by screwing himself more
violently into a pretzel, but by hitting the ball where it is pitched. That
is exactly what me and the entire world (minus Sam) has been shouting about
for months. I damn sure hope he continues to use the whole field the rest of
the year, helps the team win the pennant, and gets himself a fat contract in
another city. Should he return for lower dollars, I hope he is pressured
into accepting a move to right field and a weight clause.

Willie Harris began the 9th inning rally tonight with a base hit and scored
the winning run. He is hitting .340 and busting his tail. I think you would
be happier with Ryan Langerhans.

My approach was exactly the same approach as his Hall of Fame calibre
manager. Coach him, work with him to fight through his slump, but
don't idiotically replace him with a player of less than half of his
aptitude and skill. If you were managing this team it would be 10-15
games behind the Mets at this point because you don't think, you
emote.

Namely "seeing the ball." Baseball players go through stretches where
they don't see the ball very well. Any casual fan of the game should
know as much. Chipper talks all the time about how he only has about
two weeks per year where he's seeing the ball well from both sides of
the plate at the same time. After his recent two-homer game Brian
McCann said he was "just seeing the ball" better now than before.
This is baseball truism going back to the origins of the game itself.
In the first half Andruw clearly wasn't seeing the ball well, if at
all. As a result his mechanics got so screwed up as to be
unrecognizable for a while. But he worked his way through it and is
now seeing the ball again, and lo and behold, he's hitting a hell of a
lot like Andruw Jones has hit for the last 11 years or so.
Just like I said he would.

What about "Bobby is using him effectively" don't you understand?
Willie Harris is a good PH to have when you need a contact, reasonably
good on-base hitter to start something off. His speed makes him even
better suited for that role. He's stretched a little as the primary
LH hitter in an outfield platoon but he can manage the trick. He
would be buried as a starter.
We have an entire career's worth of data to show us exactly that to be
the case.

That would be odd considering how vocally I lobbied to replace Ryan
Langerhans with Willie Harris, although that was more for a scenery
change than anything else. The two aren't really that different of
players. Langerhans has more power and worse base-running instincts.

Nice. Glad he's turning it around. And that's come against the top two
pitching staffs in the league, two in the middle, and one near the bottom.

Blather. I think you're describing yourself as Chuck Tanner. Andruw refused
to be coached for half the season. "I'm a pull hitter. I don't want to hear
anything different from anyone." Remember? What has changed in the last 10
days? He's hitting the ball where it is pitched, to all fields. What changed
his approach? His sub .200 average on the big screen? Did Bobby call him
aside? Something happened. If Bobby did chew him out, you wouldn't read
about it because he has the class not to show up his players in the press.
Bottom line is that something motivated Andruw, and it wasn't by one of your
hugs.

Yeah, it's really hard to see the ball while you're spinning open, trying to
pull every pitch.
McCann was interviewed a week or two ago after a game-winning hit. He said
his success was due to "hitting the ball where it is pitched," something he
said Chipper emphasizes when he talks hitting and he hangs around Chipper as
much as possible to soak up his knowledge. It is a smart player's mantra.
You hit the ball where it is pitched.
All you have to do is watch a recent game and it is starkly obvious, so much
so that I can't believe you are even arguing it. Andruw's approach *has*
changed. He's not pulling off on every pitch and is making a decided effort
to go up the middle and to right. I hope to God he has the sense to continue
doing that for the rest of the year. If he goes back to pulling everything,
he'll go right back in the hole.

That's hardly a fair assessment. Harris has only had one season as a
semi-regular (409 AB), 2004 with the ChiSox when he hit .262 with a .343
OBP. The rest of his time was spent riding the pines, getting rusty, and
looking for an at bat or a pinch running appearance here and there. Like
Matt Diaz, the Braves may well have uncovered a lost jewel by giving him a
chance to play. Harris has kicked tail all year, spring training, Richmond,
and with the big club. I'm rooting for the guy. I'd also like to see what he
could with an occasional start at second base.

No, they are vastly different players. Langerhans is a defensive replacement
with average speed and a huge hole in his swing, a number 8 hitter when he
starts. Harris is a sparkplug who steals bases, rattles pitchers, and scores
runs, a prototype lead-off hitter. He's not as good defensively as Ryan but
makes up for it with his speed. But somehow I'm sure you'll argue that too.

you're being totally unfair, in addition to making a rather silly
argument from authority. robert expressed frustration about andruw's
approach. andruw changed his approach. what are you arguing about?
here's a question: if bobby had benched andruw for harris (or anyone
else capable of patrolling cf) back in june, would he have changed his
approach sooner? answer: you don't know.

I wouldn't have waited that long. One day after the "I'm a pull
hitter," he's on my bench until he declares himself open to coaching.
The conversation would go something like this:
Me: Andruw, try it like this.
Andruw: I don't want to do that. I'm a pull hitter.
Me: I've seen your way of doing it, and your way sucks. Try it my
way.
Andruw: I'm a pull hitter.
Me: Sit your ass down and pull yourself then, because you're killing
the team. Stop by my office when you decide that you want to play
again.

Reporter: Andruw, why aren't you trying to go the other way. It all
seems so obvious that you should. Even the internet mafia has your
game figured out. Why won't you listen? Why, why Andruw, why won't
you listen?

to the field yet, but damn, we're trying. I mean, it's not quite as
simple as the former no-hit middle infielder doing color commentary on
TV makes it out to be, is it? It's not kindergarten. It's a complex
task of finding a way to fix my swing without completely removing my
ability to be the offensive player that I have always been. I mean,
naturally, you know, I'm a pull hitter and my instincts are always
going to lean that way, and it's tough to learn something new while
facing major league pitching, but you know, like I said, we're
trying. Dude, we are so trying. It's not like I _want_ to be
hitting .199 going into a contract year, you know?

Tuffy Rhodes once hit three home runs on opening day.

Opening day. And it went downhill from there.
