Griffeys has been dealt, the deal is almost finalized and at this
stage of his career thats the best thing for us and him.
I know alot of people are happy. Will they continue to be happy when
they realize that this trade means we will be seeing Patterson in the
lineup every day? That is unless there is some other deal in the works
or there is some outfielder we have that I'm not aware of.
But i'm not hearing rumours about the possibility of us acquiring
another outfielder. Instead I'm hearing talk of Dunn maybe going to
TB.
yep, Pattersons probably going to be in the lineup for the rest of
the year >> Stay informed about: be careful what you wish for. |

I dont think anyone who is happy about the trade did not think one
step further and realize what you are saying.
Give these people a bit more credit than that. The Reds got prospects.
That is often a very good thing, even if not immediately. One step at
a time. >> Stay informed about: be careful what you wish for. |

from everything I've read so far, the Reds didnt get prospects. They
got minor league filler. and I'm fine with that because Griffeys time
with the Reds was almost over anyway and we save a few bucks and get
to try something else with him gone.
But yes, people are happy that griffeys gone and some of these are
the same people who have been singling out griffey for years as the
primary reason the Reds havent been winning. They are about to be
dissapointed since the reds wont improve. Were replacing griffey with
patterson (who's arguably more overpaid than griffey was), hairston -
who's injured and who is performing far above his usual pattern and
could crash and burn at any time, and whomever we call up from the
minors, of which nobodies ready. the move doesnt really improve the
team this season or any future seasons. It was a dump pure and simple.
Now they get to complain about patterson instead of griffey. that was
all i was saying. >> Stay informed about: be careful what you wish for. |

Hairston is on the DL and is not very good anyway. He's having a
career year so far. i doubt he would continue this even if he came
back from the DL at 100%.
Keppinger sucks this year (82 ops+), and isnt a good shortstop anyway.
Encarnacion should not be switched. He is not a bad thirdbaseman.
Barring further trades, we'll see a lot more Patterson, maybe some
more Janish and some Dickerson.
That being said, I think its best that Griffey has gone. But we
actually have nothing to adequately replace him. Thats pretty sad. >> Stay informed about: be careful what you wish for. |

I think they still feel +.500 is a good possibility.
I'm of 2 minds. Battle on for respectibility or acquire some
prospects. I definitely dont want to see Weathers, affeldt, Dunn etc
dumped for questionable prospects. I'd rather just hold on and try to
win some games.
if Griffey was a poison on this team, and maybe he was, we'll find
out soon. >> Stay informed about: be careful what you wish for. |

At 13 1/2 games out going into August who cares what happens this
year. The main thing is the Griffey thing wasn't working for whatever
reason and it is good to move on. Plus Griffey gets a shot at
post-season.
The Reds can now play Harrison, Edwin and Keppinger at the same time.
That evens up the lineup a bit and might put a bit of fire into
the offense. Maybe they can even experiment a bit with Encarnacion
at 1st base or right field. Anything to get him off of the hot
corner. >> Stay informed about: be careful what you wish for. |

.....because the reds are going to turn things around and go for 500?
Hopper/Patterson/Freel....I don't really care. They could give the at
bats to Chris Dickerson and see what he can do. Actually I don't that's
all that terrible an idea. Put Bruce in right with Dunn in left and let
Dickerson find out if he belongs here or not.

Matters none. This team is going nowhere, and that's about the only
thing it seems to be doing with any sort of urgency.
Unloading Griffey was a good move.
They should at least try and flip Weathers for something, too.

Trading Griffey was the thing to do. Looking back over the entire
situation, it's sad that it never really worked in Cincy. At the time it
was done, I felt like it could be one of the best trades in the history of
the game.

Doesn't matter. Last I saw his OBP was .216. Maybe they'll let
him shoot for the record of lowest OBP for a leadoff hitter in modern
baseball history, so the season will at least have one monumental
moment.
I'm more curious to see who's in the 3 hole now. Dunn because he's
hot or ??? >> Stay informed about: be careful what you wish for. |

Hairston was activated today, so maybe it wont be Patterson getting
most the reps after all. Either way were sickly thin in the OF now.
I remember when we had Dunn/griffey/Kearns/Freel/Pena and this was
referred to as "problem". What we have now is a problem. I have to
think that acquiring an everyday outfielder will be a priority this
winter and thats not even counting a possible negative decision on
resigning dunn. >> Stay informed about: be careful what you wish for. |

The outfield possibilities for 2009 are rather slim pickings. Here's
the list of free agents - guys with asterisks have an option:
Bobby Abreu NYY
Moises Alou NYM
Garret Anderson * LAA
Rocco Baldelli TB
Willie Bloomquist SEA
Emil Brown OAK
Pat Burrell PHI
Endy Chavez NYM
Carl Crawford * TB
Adam Dunn CIN
Jim Edmonds CHC
Cliff Floyd TB
Brian Giles * SD
Ken Griffey Jr. * CWS
Vladimir Guerrero * LAA
Raul Ibanez SEA
Jacque Jones DET
Mark Kotsay ATL
Rob Mackowiak WAS
Kevin Mench TOR
Jason Michaels * CLE
Craig Monroe MIN
Jay Payton BAL
Scott Podsednik COL
Manny Ramirez * LAD
Juan Rivera LAA
Rondell White MIN
There's no one on that list I'd be real excited to give a long term
deal to play centerfield. >> Stay informed about: be careful what you wish for. |

Given Dusty's past behavior, that seems likely. Me, I'd work Valentin
into the lineup, presumably at first with Votto in right (unless and
until Hairston returns and resumes hitting like never before.)
Can we start a pool for "most idiotic Dusty Baker lienup?" Patterson
leading off, Keppinger second, Phillips fourth (especially when facing
right-handed pitchers) but I'm having trouble coming up with a truly
horrible choice for third -- maybe Encarnacion against RHP and Jay
Bruce against LHP. Meanwhile, he can always drop Dunn to 8th since his
batting average is only 50 points or so higher than Patterson's . >> Stay informed about: be careful what you wish for. |
