In case you have been living in a cave in Kenya, I will tell you just what it
was that Grady did (or didn't do) that has brought the wrath of Red Sox Nation
upon his amiable head. The Red Sox led by a 5-2 score going to the bottom of
the 8th inning at Yankee Stadium. Pedro Martinez had pitched the first 7
innings. He had allowed only 2 runs and six hits. But there were clues as big
as Anna Nicole Smith that Pedro was about finished. Through the first 6
innings Pedro allowed only one run on three hits. In the 7th inning he allowed
another run on 3 more hits. In his three previous post-season starts he came
out after seven innings each time. None of those starts were of the quality
that one expected from Pedro Martinez. He had allowed 3, 3, and 4 earned runs
and appeared gassed after 7 innings each time. His ERA for those starts was
4.29. He allowed 10 runs and 19 hits in 21 innings, while striking out only
15. During 186 2/3 regular season innings his ERA was a league leading 2.22
with 206 strikeouts.
