If they want Salty (and_ another top player!) then they have to let the team
negotiate an extension before the deal closes. You don't give up Salty+ for
a 2.5 month rental, especially given the low likelihood that the Braves
would be able to afford to keep him in the offseason. Given the market these
days, the Braves simply wouldn't be able to afford to keep him
I say this knowing full well that a good hitter could make the difference
for the Braves making the postseason or not, and I don't underestimate the
value of that. But I don't think that Mark T is so much of a better hitter
than Salty to rationalize this deal. If the team can get an 850 OPS over the
next few years from Salty playing 1B and backing up catcher, then I think
they should keep him, and spend the money on an outfielder or a starting
pitcher.
