What do you all think, do the Dbacks still have a chance at winning the wild
card?

In my opinon, they do. 3 1/2 games in back of the Phillies and Marlins, they go
against Hampton tomorrow. Cubs against Dodgers and Phillies against St. Louis.
If they are going to make their move, it's now or never.

Not only is the wild card still a possibility (as two clubs with almost zero
experience in the heat of a playoff chase stand in front of the 'Backs), but
their experiences over the past several games suggest that, with the
availability of Barry Bonds an enormous quaestion mark for the Giants the
rest of this season on top of their ever-increasing injury woes of late,
even San francisco is eminently catchable.

The only caveat is, Arizona actually has to win a game or three. With their
favorite patsies in town the next few nights, there's no better time to for
our Snakes to start doing their part.

I disagree. This year's D-back team just doesn't seem interested.

Before the Atlanta series, I looked at the schedule and did a little math.
If they were to split the remaining 4-game series, win each 3-game set
2-of-3, sweep the 2-game series with San Diego and also the makeup
game with Kansas City...

they'd finish with 91 wins. Which "might" win the wild card but might
not as well. And definitely won't take the division.

To put it another way: they've gotta tie or win every series (on average)
for the rest of the season. They are already one game down by going
a very weak 1-3 against the Braves.

I just don't see it happening.

Even with Barry Bonds taking August off, I don't think the
Diamondbacks should be hoping to win the West this year.
It would be a desperate struggle and could backfire.

Wild-card will do.

The Braves are the best team in baseball, and even I don't
expect they'll miss the World Series. Taking only one
from them is the expected result.

Probably so, but it was not a competitive series. The 3 losses
were blowouts (even though the offense finally came to life in
the first two) and the win required a herculean effort from Schilling.
The team should be playing with a playoff mentality now, and it's not.

Back to my little mathematical exercise... if they win 2 games in
every series from here on plus the KC game (a record of 25-13),
they will finish with 90 wins. I don't see them getting that hot...
and even if they do, 90 wins is usually not enough to win the WC
(2002: SF/95 wins, 2001: StL/93, 2000:NYM/99). Every series
they lose now is just one more nail in the coffin.

For what it's worth.

Arizona has to catch the Dodgers first, THEN worry about SF.

Consider them caught for today. The D'Backs have a 1/2 game lead on the
Dodgers. SF is a little too far away. Let's just worry about the wildcard.
