I have a friend who is looking to do fantasy baseball with some friends, but
neither he nor they have computers or access to one. (Incarceration.)

Can they do a league with pencil and paper? Are there any Web resources I
can print and mail to them to get them started?

Any help appreciated.

I guess if I had nothing but free time on my hands.... I could do a
league in longhand. Wow. Send them some greenbar accounting paper when
you send the rules, it comes with lines and columns ready to go....

Why not? That's how we did it in the "old days". Every Wednesday, when
Baseball Weekly came out, we sat down and penciled in all of the stats,
then dug out the calculator and crunched the numbers. We rotated this duty
amongst the owners, and it worked for years... then the web was invented,
and it's been downhill ever since. :^)

I have been at this with my league for 18 years. First 2 years, I did all
the stats by hand.

I can say without a doubt, that without the stats services, my league would
have gone 3 years. Smile

:^) You lasted a year longer than I did! After the first year of doing it
all myself, I insisted that the next year we rotate the duty each week.
That worked, and we ran for 6 years in that fashion until in 1994 we
purchased a software program that dialed up to a database server somewhere
and updated it's stats (of course, back then with 1200bd modems, that
process took damn near as long as the by-hand process did). VERY
rudimentary by today's standards, but man, did we think we were hot stuff.
Enough of us had moved away in the next 2 years that the league disbanded
before we entered the age of the WWW-based stats services.

But, to answer the original question of this thread: yes you can send your
buddies any number of periodicals that contain statistics, and they can
compile by hand just fine. I'm sure if I was in their situation, the
ammount of time that it took wouldn't really matter, and I'd probably
relish every minute of it.

Our league did the stats by hand for the 1st few years. It's
tedious and I wouldn't want to go back to that, but it's doable.
USA Today prints the stats you would need each week.
