| On Friday Direct TV viewers were offered the local LA broadcast in HD with
Vin Scully doing his solo number. Why the good people of LA haven't
shouted this down by now, I can't say. A perpetual monotone, even if it's
Vin Scully, makes me ill.

We may be the only two that feel this way...Scully is idolized by just
about everyone. He does have a very smooth style and a "way with words"
but I would appreciate him a lot more if he would just come up for air
once in a while.
I don't know why some broadcasters feel it necessary to never allow dead
air when presenting a game, especially when doing TV....But for whatever
reason, Scully just keeps talking and talking and talking.
Another one that doesn't believe in dead air is Jon Miller.
Personally, I can't take too much of either one.

Blasphemy!!!!! Vin Scully is a god. . Yeah, he is getting older and
tends to miss-speak now and then and re-tell stories but he is still one of
the very best there is.
BTW, the dead air thing is (or was) a matter of professional pride. The
idea was people looking for the station or turning on their radio should
never hear "nothing". It only takes a few seconds for someone to move on.
It would be like changing channels on the tv and seeing a blank screen. It
just isn't done. Yes, it gets a little monotonous while listening to a 3
hour game. Just wanted to mention that back when Scully and many others
were learning the trade it being able to fill in dead air is what made you
tops in the field.

Hmmm, knowing I'm by far in the minority when it comes to Scully, I
really have to disagree with you.
In this situation (i.e. sport broadcasting), I don't accept the argument
that people should never hear nothing, be it radio or TV sport broadcasting.
Bob Prince (Pittsburgh and later Houston) was announcing baseball long
before Scully and was weaned in the radio media. He didn't feel the
"need" to fill dead air time and he was one of the best at his profession.
Same can be said about the number one sport broadcaster (IMO), Jack
Buck. He was more than willing to let the action dictate what and when
he had something to say.
Skip Caray (Atlanta) the same way.
I have no argument that Scully belongs in broadcasting's Hall of Fame.
It just so happens that he drives me a bit crazy with his constant chatter.
After about 5 minutes, I find myself concentrating more on his
constant banter than what he is actually saying.....As I say, I feel the
same way about Miller but again, although I'm by far in the minority,
just my opinion.

I'm not saying I think people should never hear dead air. I am saying that
the common theory in Broadcast was you never wanted dead air. "Good"
announcers learned to chatter non stop, disk jockeys learned to segue one
song into another etc. Yes, some bucked the theory and developed their own
style but if you took broadcast journalism in college 20 years ago...that's
what they taught.......errr...not that I would be that old

Everyone's allowed their own opinion. The non stop talking isn't my
favorite thing about Scully but every time I am doomed to listen to another
teams feed or even the rest of the Dodgers Broadcast team I am reminded how
lucky I am to be able to listen to Scully.

Is it possible that Scully is doing a simultaneous rsdiocast and
telecast? >> Stay informed about: Vin Scully |

You could even say that it's the silence & pauses that makes speech
comprehensible. One needs to shape the silence, not eliminate it.

ugh... You can have him.

If 2 years is a long time.. because Bob began with Rosey Rowswell on
the Pirate radio broadcasts in 1948 and his affiliation with the
ballclub spanned five decades. He was known as "The Gunner" for his
rapid-fire delivery.
( I Liked Bob as well) and Vin Started in 1950.
Vin has done Major League Baseball,NFL football,PGA golf in his over
50 ++ Seasons.
His 57-year tenure with the Dodgers (1950-2007) is the longest of any
broadcaster with a single club in professional sports history.
I do like directv during the first week of the game.. then during the
half.. cuz I get to hear Vin and say.. yep Baseball is really here for
the season.
remember these fellas learned in Radio when they had to describe the
action on the field as if we were there.
Not a lot of TV coverage back then

Man oh man, you are right about this.
He is definitely, positively one of the all time best baseball
broadcasters. There is no better voice for the game of baseball than
Harwell.
Can't get any better than that.

Usually, he will call the first three innings of a Dodgers game via a
radio-and-television simulcast, then the rest exclusively for
television >> Stay informed about: Vin Scully |

I'm with you, tks, on each point you make here (Scully, Buck, Skip
Caray). So that makes at least three of us.

V.S. is a "motor mouth".... He feels that
if he takes a breath, the viewers would
abandon him... Same for any number of
insecure talking heads....
My father used to sit and curse Jack
Brickhouse, throw Hamms bottles at the
T&V, because he would talk, talk, talk...
But, compared to todays Diarrhea mouths,
J.B. was like a Monk.... the silent kind.
You would not believe the motor mouths
we have out here in Denver.... I cannot
listen to them... And what a shame....
the sponsors have NO IDEA.....

haha..... yes,yes... that is correct.
Those were some fun times..... I once
asked my dad why he always drank
Hamms beer.. he said, cuz they bring
the Cubs game to the people. I guess
that was a good answer.....
Oh..... and he said also cuz it made him
pee sky blue water... >> Stay informed about: Vin Scully |
