If by "killing this team" you mean "is not quite as good as the
offense, relative to the rest of the league" then I agree. But
"killing" is a bit much, it seems to me. The Sox currently are
7th in the league in ERA. Around league-average pretty much defines
"neither bad nor good." Yes, the pitching could be better, but it
has not been so bad as to warrant desperation. (And the offense has
not been so good that it can't be improved -- the Sox are currently
the 4th-best team in the league at scoring runs).
Of course, my Varitek post concerned his performance post-ASB.
I wonder how the offense and pitching/defense have done since the
break...
Since the break, the Sox have been the 10th-best team in the AL
at scoring runs. In that same time, the Sox have had the third-best
ERA in the league. I think my pointing out that Varitek's resurgence
has helped mask the offensive woes post-break less noticeable was right
on the money. Do you disagree?
