If so, this is kinda sorta looking like a ballteam, a little.

Except for the pitching. And the other 2/3rds of the lineup...

You know, you may not be losing all that much, assuming Penny stays
healthy. Figure that The Unit was worth 17 wins this year, a
respectable total. Penny, at worst will finish with 12 wins. He's
also 26 years old, which gives you a few more years of production.
Again, assuming he's healthy.

Where you really score is Yhency Brazoban. The kid is 24 and, from my
perch in section 28 of Dodger Stadium, all you can see is upside. He
was a rookie but he was such a strong set-up guy that we were able to
get rid of Guillermo Mota--without blinking. Brazoban actually
outpitched Mota in all categories after Mo was sent to Florida.

I hadn't followed the Snakes that closely last year, so I don't know
any numbers on the effectiveness of the bullpen, but Yhency gives you
instant credibility as set-up. He may need time to grow into the
closer role, but don't discount that either.

Overall, the worst part of this deal for you is that you get Shawn
Green. If he's interested, you'll be fine. If not, you'll still
finish ahead of LA.

The trade that's apparently done has the D-Backs getting Shawn Green, Brad
Penny and Yhency Brazoban. The Dodgers get Javier Vazquez and a couple of
minor leaguers (Dioner Navarro and Eric Duncan).

What a long, strange trip for Brad Penny.

Green managed to put up two terrific seasons in Dodger Stadium (2001 and
2002), but 2000, 2003 and 2004 were not so great. His offense last year
was decidedly mediocre, especially considering how much money he's making.
Here's hoping a change of scenery and a more hitter-friendly home park
will perk up his bat.

Randy, we're sad to see you go. I hope you achieve all the milestones you
want to, but you damn well better go into the HOF as a D-Back.
