Title says it all. These are dark times indeed.

November of 2001 seems like a really long time ago.

Makes me awfully curious about the team makeup at the trading deadline.

It will be interesting to see if Finley and the Unit will be wearing new
uniforms at the trading deadline...

Finley's getting a lot more talk. Probably because of
course any team in baseball would pay the Unit's price to
have the Unit. So it's not worth talking about, because
you could never make a case either way, because all cases
for the Unit are possible.

I actually think that the Unit will not be traded. Let me give you my
reasons:

He has a no trade clause and he likes it here

He has a home in Phoenix.

What percentage of the game attendance would remain if they traded
Johnson after just giving up Schilling last year?

He has a lot of back pay coming.

Now, let's look at Finley.

He becomes a free agent next year, that means no personnel for him
unless the D'Backs resign him.

He is still a very productive player and one of the best base runners in
MLB.

He has started more making errors this year but his offensive output is
up for this time of year. He usually gets hot after the break.

Anyway, to me the biggest disappointments this year are Webb and
Cintron. The best player this year - Bautista.

I see the D'backs as:

1b - Hillenbrand - needs to work on his offense.....1 for 12 with bases
juiced. should stay at 1b, better there than home position at 3b
2b - Hairston - Work with him, he is a newbie, Alomar - trade out
3b - Tracy - Getting better
SS - Olson - Cintron needs to sit with BB for awhile.
Util - Green
LF - Gonzo - Hispanic hero, great following, will not be traded although
he should be before the Unit is.
CF - Finley - till Terrero ready to come up from from Tucson then trade
Fins (one of my favorite players.....sniff....)
RF - Bautista - Most consistent player on team currently.
Pinch hit - Colbrunn - need a left hander, possible role for Cintron to
get his act together.
C - Brito - Hammock seems to work best with Randy - otherwise backup to
Brito.

SP - Randy - So far our only hope
SP - Webb - although this year makes me cringe.
SP - Good - Shaky but here.
SP - Sparks -
SP - Shane Reynolds - Why in hell didn't we keep Batista? He is only
3.5 million.

BP - Koplove, Choate, Dessens (shoulda kept Durazo), Randolph (L/L),
Service, Fossum (L/L), Villafuerte.

When Valverde comes back - drop Villafuerte, Reyonolds or Service
When Mantai comes back - showboat him and trade him. He is free agent
next year, IIRC.

Needs,

Number 3, 4, 5 starter includgin a L/L. new meat in bullpen
outfield players - no reserves for them.
Kata back - out for season, Sexton back - out for season, Valverde back,
Brun back,

Brenley - questionable.

I'd agree with you except I'd put Counsell at third, Spivey at second, Overbay
at first and...wait...what?

How about Doug Melvin at GM?
