Twins ask Seattle about Beltre
By LA VELLE E. NEAL III, Star Tribune
http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/25130074.html?location_refer=T...s:highl
July 14, 2008
DETROIT - The Twins recently contacted Seattle to inquire about third
baseman Adrian Beltre as they look for ways to boost their offense
against lefthanded pitching, a club source said.
It's unclear how deep the discussions got, but the Twins decided to
act on the internal discussions they had about the Mariners slugger.
Beltre, 29, is batting .259 with 16 homers and 46 RBI. He is regarded
as an excellent defensive player, having won the Gold Glove at third
last year, and could be rejuvenated by being in a pennant chase. He is
being paid $12 million this season and again in 2009.
The Twins are 13-14 against lefthanded starters, with a slugging
percentage of .380 and on base-plus-slugging percentage (OPS) of .695.
Their numbers against righthanded starters -- .422 slugging and .768
OPS -- are noticeably better.

Beltre is pretty much the same vs. lefties or righties.
Career
righties .270/.320/.461
lefties .272/.349/.448

Correction: $12.9 million. Note that he would be a free agent before
the new ballpark opens.
He had one stellar year which he parlayed into a $13M a year salary.
So if you bat .270 and can hit 25 HRs a year you get $13M.
He would solve the 3B problem the Twins have had since Koskie left the
team. I do like the Buscher kid, but Gardenhire won't bat him against
lefties. I like the idea, it shows the Twins are serious about winning
this year, but it depends on who the Twins give up to get him. >> Stay informed about: Twins ask Seattle about Beltre |

I think I might be inclined to go with Buscher (What's wrong with him,
really?) and use any extra money floating around for some help in the
bullpen. I mean the best scenario I can think of is trading Livan for
a reliever and bringing up No-no.
No?

Better yet, see if you can snag Beltre for a song (Seattle probably
just wants rid of the contract, since they're not likely to compete
next year either). Then trade Hernanzez for a box of Cracker Jacks and
bring up the organization's best pitcher. You've improved your offense
AND your defense.
And since I'm dreaming, maybe they can find a setup man on the cheap.
Bullpen help never fetches the premium starting pitching or offense
command.
If those three things happened, I'd be inclined to believe the Twins
might just win this thing.

-------------------------------------------------
The best "trade" they could pull off is bringing up Cisco and putting Livan
in the pen for now. I think keeping him is not a bad idea as someone is
bound to get hurt.
As much as it would be nice to get another arm, I'd think they have enough
plus arms to make it work with Crain, Guerrier, and Nathan, not to mention
Reyes and Breslow who have done fine jobs. Sure, it would be nice to add
another arm, but as many have said you usually overpay for bullpen help
midseason.

So what? Trade Livan. If someone gets hurt anybody they put in there
would do a better job than Livan. Bring up Mulvey (3.84 ERA, 1.39
WHIP) or Duensing (4.28 ERA, 1.27 WHIP). >> Stay informed about: Twins ask Seattle about Beltre |

I agree 100%. It's time to get Liriano back and to take Hernandez out
of the starting rotation for now.

Yes, for trades that don't need to clear waivers. For trades that must
clear waivers the deadline is August 31st. >> Stay informed about: Twins ask Seattle about Beltre |

Good point. And with Livan's strong start, there might actually be
some takers out there.
