He's a HOF shoe-in. He's the greatest relief pitcher in history.
But he's also in danger of making the same mistake that so many great
players have made before - playing a year longer than they should
have.

I'm not saying that he should step down right now. He's not
terrible, but he's also not the same pitcher that we all remember.
If he sticks around after this season he's going to get worse. Instead
of stepping out while everyone remembers how great he's been, our most
recent memory will be the pain of watching him blow all those saves.

Speaking from someone who was a HUGE Tony Gwynn fan and hated to see
him go, Tony should have retired one year earlier instead of playing
his last year as a pinch-hitter.
Trevor, being a closer, is in a much more delicate situation. If
Tony grounded into a double-play as a pinch-hitter it probably
wouldn't cost us a game. If Trevor gives up a two-run home in the 9th,
it probably DOES cost us a game.

I believe he has converted 11 of 14 save opportunities this year, and
has been on a roll in recent weeks til today... several 1-2-3 innings
including against SF on Friday.

He is the only Closer with 40+ saves the last 4 years in a row in the
NL or the AL. You don't give up on a guy like that.

As we get into June, any objective observer has to be concerned. I'm the
biggest Trevor whore there is, but the fact is that he's got four losses and
three blown saves this year, and on only one occasion have they come in the
same game. Put more simply, our closer has lost and/or blown six games in
two months. That is a problem, because otherwise we're a .500 club right
now.

Sure, but basing his effectiveness on save opportunities alone is dubious at
best. More illustrative is the fact that 30% of Trevor's appearances (6 out
of 20) this year have resulted in losses or blown saves. This is no longer
attributable to his annual April hiccup. This is, as much as it pains me to
say it, a pitcher in serious decline.

HOFer, yes. Greatest relief pitcher ever, no.

We also must factor in the 2nd half of last season, when his ERA
ballooned to 4.44 and he blew 5
saves in 22 opportunities.
So its not just this year.

He's still not terrible, but unless he starts turning it around soon
we are looking at a long-term trend.
And at his age that can't be good.

I am gonna stick with Trevor. He's not ready for retirement yet. 11
for 14 in save opportunities this year, at his age will do just fine.
Major league hitters get paid to get the big hits off major league
closers. It's going to happen to the best of them. Bud Black on the
other hand should think about early retirement. I know Khalil Greene
needed a day off, but 1 inning as a defensive sub is not going to kill
him. Edgar Gonzalez freezing on defense gave the Giants the winning
run. Hey Bud, pull your head out of your arse, and remember how to
make lineup changes.
